CAUTION
Always apply the parking brake and block the wheels before performing idle adjustments, or any engine running tests.

Holley 5220/6520 Carburetors

2.2L ENGINES
  1. Check and adjust the ignition timing.
  2.
  3. Disconnect and plug the vacuum connector at the Coolant Vacuum Switch Cold Closed (CVSCC) located on the top of the thermostat housing.
  4.
  5. Unplug the connector at the radiator fan and attach a jumper wire so that the cooling fan will run constantly. Remove the PCV valve from the engine and allow it to draw under hood air.
  6.
  7. Connect a tachometer to the engine.
  8.
  9. Ground the carburetor switch with a jumper wire.
  10.
  11. On models equipped with a 6250 carburetor, unplug the oxygen system test connector on the left fender shield.
  12.
  13. Start the engine and run until normal operating temperature is reached.
  14.
  15. Turn the idle adjustment screw until required rpm is reached. (Refer to the Underhood Specification Label or Tune-Up Chart). Shut off the engine.
  16.
  17. Reconnect the PCV valve, oxygen connector, vacuum connector (CVSCC) and remove the carburetor switch jumper. Remove the radiator fan jumper and reconnect the harness.
  18.

After Step 9 is completed, the idle speed might change. This is normal and the engine speed should not be readjusted.

  1. Refer to Fuel System for the fast idle, air conditioning idle speed check and choke kick adjustment procedures.
  2.

Mikuni Carburetor
2.6L ENGINES
  1. Connect a tachometer to the engine.
  2.
  3. Check and adjust the ignition timing.
  4.
  5. Start and run the engine until normal operating temperature is reached.
  6.
  7. Unplug the cooling fan harness connector.
  8.
  9. Run at 2500 rpm for 10 seconds. Return the engine to idle.
  10.
  11. Wait two minutes and check engine rpm indicated on the tachometer. If the idle speed is not within the specifications indicated on the underhood sticker or Tune-Up Chart, adjust the idle speed screw as necessary.
  12.
  13. Models equipped with air condition, set temperature control lever to coldest position and turn on air conditioning. With the compressor running, set idle speed to 900 rpm with idle up screw.
  14.
  15. After adjustment is complete, shut off the engine, disconnect the tachometer and reconnect the cooling fan harness.
  16.

Fuel Injected Engines

The idle speed is controlled by the Automatic Idle Speed (AIS) motor, which is controlled by the logic module. The logic module receives data from various sensors in the system and adjusts the engine idle to a predetermined speed. Idle speed specifications can be found on the Vehicle Emission Control Information (VECI) label, located in the engine compartment. If the idle speed is not within specification and there are no problems with the system, the vehicle should be taken to an authorized dealer for service.
