    Wheel Speed Sensor

    Each wheel has its own wheel speed sensor and sends a small AC signal to the control module. Correct ABS operation depends on accurate wheel speed signals. The vehicle's wheels and tires must all be the same size and type in order to generate accurate signals. If there is a variation between wheel and tire sizes, inaccurate wheel speed signals will be produced.


    WARNING
    It is very critical that the wheel speed sensor(s) be installed correctly to ensure continued system operation. The sensor cables must be installed, routed and clipped properly. Failure to install the sensor(s) properly could result in contact with moving parts or overextension of sensor cables. This will cause ABS component failure and an open circuit.

    REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



    Cirrus, Stratus, Sebring Convertible and Breeze
    Front Wheel Speed Sensor

    See Figures 1 through 5

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable at strut tower.
    2.  
    3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
    4.  
    5. Remove the front wheel(s) of the wheel speed sensor(s) requiring removal.
    6.  
    7. Remove the speed sensor cable routing bracket from the steering knuckle.
    8.  
    9. Remove the speed sensor wiring harness sealing grommet retainer/routing bracket from the inner fender.
    10.  
    11. Remove the sealing grommet from the inner fender and disconnect the speed sensor cable from the vehicle wiring harness.
    12.  
    13. Remove the speed sensor head-to-steering knuckle retaining bolt. Remove the speed sensor head from the steering knuckle.
    14.  
    15. If the speed sensor head cannot be removed from the steering knuckle due to corrosion, remove the brake caliper from the brake rotor and support from the knuckle using a strong piece of wire. Then remove the brake rotor from the vehicle and insert a pin punch through the hole on the front part of the steering knuckle for the sensor head locating pin. Tap the locating pin for the wheel speed sensor out of the steering knuckle.

    17. Carefully inspect the condition of the sensor head and tone wheel for broken or missing teeth which can cause erratic sensor signals.

    To install:
    1. Connect the wheel speed sensor wiring connector to the vehicle wiring harness.
    2.  
    3. Install the sensor cable sealing grommet into the front inner fender. Install the sensor cable sealing grommet retainer/routing bracket on the front inner fender. Install and tighten routing bracket mounting bolt.
    4.  
    5. Install the speed sensor cable routing bracket onto the steering knuckle. Install the bracket mounting bolt and tighten the bolt to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm). Be sure the sensor cable is looped toward the strut. If the sensor cable is not routed in this direction, it will contact the wheel or tire, causing serious damage to the speed sensor cable.
    6.  
    7. Apply a light coating of MOPAR® Multi-Purpose Grease, or equivalent, to the locating pin of the speed sensor. Install the speed sensor head onto the steering knuckle. Install the sensor head mounting screw and tighten to 55 inch lbs. (6 Nm).

    9. Install front wheel(s) and lug nuts. Tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to 95 ft. lbs. (129 Nm).
    10.  
    11. Lower the vehicle. Connect the negative battery cable. Test drive the vehicle to check for proper operation of the base and ABS systems.

    Rear Wheel Speed Sensor

    See Figures 6 through 10

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable at strut tower.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the speed sensor cable electrical connector from the vehicle wiring harness. The wiring connection is located in the trunk of the vehicle.
    4.  
    5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
    6.  
    7. Remove the rear wheel(s) of the wheel speed sensor(s) requiring removal.
    8.  
    9. Remove the speed sensor cable sealing grommet retainer from the vehicle rear frame rail.
    10.  
    11. Remove the sealing grommet and sensor cable from the hole in the body of the vehicle.
    12.  
    13. Remove the speed sensor routing clips from the rear upper control arm and brake line flex hose routing bracket.
    14.  
    15. Remove the speed sensor head from the rear brake support plate.
    16.  
    17. Carefully inspect the condition of the sensor head and the tone wheel for broken or missing teeth which can cause erratic sensor signals.

    To install:
    1. Install the wheel speed sensor head into the brake support plate. Install the speed sensor retaining bolt and torque to 75 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Install the speed sensor cable routing clips on the brake line flex hose bracket and upper control arm. Install and tighten the mounting bolts for the routing clip.
    4.  
    5. Install the wheel speed sensor wiring connector through the hole in the inner fender and into the vehicle trunk.
    6.  
    7. Install the speed sensor sealing grommet into the hole in the inner fender. Install the sensor sealing grommet retainer and attaching bolt on the rear frame rail.
    8.  
    9. Install the front wheel(s) and lug nuts. Tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to 95 ft. lbs. (129 Nm).
    10.  
    11. Lower the vehicle.
    12.  
    13. Attach the sensor cable connector to the vehicle wiring harness, and slide the foam insulation sleeve over the wiring connection to prevent it from rattling against the body of the vehicle.
    14.  
    15. Connect the negative battery cable. Test drive the vehicle to check for proper operation of the base and ABS systems.

    Sebring Coupe and Avenger

    Front ABS Wheel Speed Sensor

    See Figure 11

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Remove the inner fender splash shield.
    4.  
    5. Remove the clips securing the speed sensor lead.
    6.  
    7. Remove the retaining screw and remove the speed sensor.
    8.

    To install:
    1. Attach the wheel speed sensor with the retaining screw.
    2.  
    3. Secure the speed sensor lead with the clips.
    4.  


    WARNING
    Make sure the lead wire is properly routed in its original position. If the lead wire is improperly installed it could be damaged by moving parts.

    1. Install the inner fender splash shield.
    2.  
    3. Connect the negative battery cable and check the ABS system for proper operation.
    4.  

    Rear ABS Wheel Speed Sensor

    See Figure 11

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  
    3. Remove the clips securing the speed sensor lead.
    4.  
    5. Remove the retaining screw and remove the speed sensor.
    6.  

    To install:
    1. Attach the wheel speed sensor with the retaining screw.
    2.  
    3. Secure the speed sensor lead with the clips.
    4.  


    WARNING
    Make sure the lead wire is properly routed in its original position. If the lead wire is improperly installed it could be damaged by moving parts.

    1. Connect the negative battery cable and check the ABS system for proper operation.
    2.  

    Testing

    See Figures 12 and 13

    1. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the wheel speed sensor connector terminals.
    2.  
    3. The resistance should measure 1.0-1.5k ohms. If the resistance measures outside this value, replace the wheel speed sensor.
    4.  
    5. Remove the wheel speed sensor from the vehicle, and then measure the speed sensor insulation resistance between one of the connector terminals and the body of the speed sensor. Then measure the resistance between the other connector terminal and the speed sensor body.
    6.  
    7. The resistance should measure 100k ohms or more. If the wheel speed sensor insulation resistance measures below this value, replace the wheel speed sensor.
