  1. If equipped with ABS, remove the routing clip and chassis brake lines, as an assembly, from the inboard mounting stud for the master cylinder. Be careful not to bend or kink the chassis brake lines.
  2.
  3. Remove the master cylinder.
  4.

To install:
  1. Bench bleed the master cylinder before installing it into the vehicle.
  2.
  3. Install the master cylinder onto the brake booster.
  4.
  5. If equipped, install the routing clip and chassis brake lines on the inboard mounting stud for the master cylinder.
  6.
  7. Tighten the master cylinder mounting nuts to 250 inch lbs. (28 Nm).
  8.
  9. Connect the hydraulic lines to the master cylinder.
  10.
  11. Tighten the hydraulic lines to 145 inch lbs. (17 Nm).
  12.
  13. Connect the brake fluid level sensor electrical harness.
  14.

It is not necessary to the bleed the entire brake system after replacing the master cylinder. However, the master cylinder must have been properly bled and filled upon installation.

  1. Verify a firm brake pedal before attempting to move the vehicle. Carefully road test and check for proper operation.

WARNING
Use care when working with brake fluid. Brake fluid is extremely harmful to painted surfaces.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable first, then the positive battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the battery from the vehicle.
  4.
  5. If equipped with manual transaxle, remove the clutch fluid reservoir mounting bracket.
  6.
  7. Remove the relay assembly mounting bolts and position off to the side.
  8.
  9. Remove the windshield washer fluid tank.
  10.
  11. Before removing the master cylinder, remove the brake fluid in the reservoir using a hand held vacuum pump, equivalent tool.
  12.
  13. Disengage the fluid level sensor connector, if equipped.
  14.
  15. Disconnect the hoses from the master cylinder to the fluid reservoir. Plug the hoses to prevent drainage.
  16.
  17. Disconnect the brake lines from the master cylinder.
  18.
  19. Remove the two nuts securing the master cylinder to the brake booster and remove the master cylinder.

To install:
  1. Install the master cylinder to the booster mounting studs. Install the mounting nuts and tighten to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  2.
  3. Connect the reservoir hoses to the master cylinder and secure with clamps.
  4.
  5. Connect the brake lines to the master cylinder and tighten to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
  6.
  7. Connect the brake fluid level sensor wiring harness.
  8.
  9. Install the windshield washer fluid tank.
  10.
  11. Place the relay assembly back into correct position and tighten the mounting bolts.
  12.
  13. If equipped, install the clutch fluid reservoir mounting bracket.
  14.
  15. Install the battery. Connect the positive battery cable first, then the negative battery cable.
  16.
  17. Fill the reservoir to the proper level with clean DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid. Bleed the master cylinder.
  18.
  19. Apply the brake pedal and check for firmness. If the pedal is spongy, air is present in the system and bleeding of the entire system is required.
  20.
  21. Check the brakes for proper operation and leaks.
