Front Crankshaft Seal

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



4-Cylinder Engines

See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the accessory drive belts.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Remove the crankshaft damper/pulley.
  8.  
  9. Remove the timing belt cover.
  10.  
  11. Remove the timing belt.
  12.  
  13. Remove the crankshaft sprocket.
  14.  


WARNING
Be careful as not to nick the seal surface of the crankshaft or the seal bore.

  1. Remove the front crankshaft seal using a seal puller tool. Be careful not to damage the seal contact area of the crankshaft.

To install
  1. Apply a light coating of clean engine oil to the lip of the new oil seal. Install the new front crankshaft oil seal by using oil seal installer tool No. 6780-1 or an equivalent tool.
  2.  
  3. Place the new oil seal into the opening with the seal spring facing the inside of the engine. Be sure the oil seal is installed flush with the front cover.
  4.  
  5. Install the crankshaft timing belt sprocket.
  6.  
  7. Install the timing belt.
  8.  
  9. Install the timing belt cover.
  10.  
  11. Install the crankshaft damper/pulley.
  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Reinstall the accessory drive belts. Adjust the belts to the proper tension.
  16.  
  17. Refill the engine with the correct amount of clean engine oil. A filter change is recommended.
  18.  
  19. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  20.  

6-Cylinder Engines

See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove the accessory drive belts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the crankshaft damper/pulley.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front timing belt covers.
  10.  
  11. Remove the timing belt.
  12.  
  13. Remove the crankshaft sprocket and key.
  14.  
  15. Remove the front crankshaft seal by prying it out with a flat tipped prytool. Be sure to cover the end of the prytool tip with a shop towel.

WARNING
Be careful as not to nick the seal surface of the crankshaft or the seal bore.

To install:
  1. Apply a light coating of clean engine oil to the lip of the new oil seal. Install the new front crankshaft oil seal into the oil pump housing by using oil seal installer tool No. MD998717 or an equivalent tool. Be sure the oil seal is installed flush with the oil pump cover.
  2.  
  3. Install the crankshaft timing belt sprocket and key.
  4.  
  5. Install the timing belt.
  6.  
  7. Install the timing belt covers.
  8.  
  9. Install the crankshaft damper/pulley onto the crankshaft.
  10.  
  11. Install the accessory drive belts.
  12.  
  13. Fill the engine with the correct amount of clean engine oil.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  16.
