REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



4-Cylinder Engines

See Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the timing belt.
  4.  
  5. Remove the oil pan.
  6.  
  7. Using a suitable puller, draw the crankshaft sprocket from the front of the crankshaft.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil pump pickup tube and O-ring.
  10.

  1. Remove the oil pump and front crankshaft seal. The front cover/oil pump mounting bolts may be different sizes and must be reinstalled in their original locations. Remove and tag the front cover mounting bolts.

  3. Inspect the oil pump case for damage and remove the rear cover.
  4.

  1. Remove the pump rotors and inspect the inside of the case for excessive wear.
  2.  
  3. Check that the oil relief plunger slides smoothly and check for a broken spring. Repair or replace components as necessary.
  4.  

To install:
  1. Clean all parts well. Make sure the block and pump surfaces are clean and free of old sealer.
  2.  
  3. Assemble the pump, using new parts as required, with clean oil. Align the marks on the inner and outer rotors when assembling.
  4.  
  5. Install the pump's rear cover and tighten the screws to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  6.

  1. Reinstall the pump relief valve, spring, gasket and valve cap. Tighten the valve cap to 30-33 ft. lbs. (41-44 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Apply gasket maker sealant to the engine block mounting surface of the oil pump body.
  4.  
  5. Install the oil ring into the discharge passage of the pump body.
  6.  
  7. Prime the oil pump before installation by filling the rotor cavity with clean engine oil.
  8.  
  9. Align the flats of the oil pump rotor with the flats on the crankshaft as you install the pump to the engine block.
  10.  
  11. Install and tighten the oil pump-to-engine block mounting bolts to 17-21 ft. lbs. (23-28 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install a new front oil seal.
  14.  
  15. Install the crankshaft sprocket.
  16.  
  17. Install the oil pump pickup tube and O-ring. Tighten the oil pump pickup tube mounting screw to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the oil pan.
  20.  
  21. Install the timing belt and covers.
  22.  
  23. Install the crankshaft damper.
  24.  
  25. Install a new oil filter.
  26.  
  27. Refill the engine with new, clean engine oil and coolant.
  28.  
  29. Start the engine and check for leaks. An oil pressure gauge should be installed to verify proper engine oil pressure.
  30.  

6-Cylinder Engines

See Figures 5 and 6

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the drive belts and accessories.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine coolant.
  6.  
  7. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Drain the engine oil.
  8.  
  9. Remove the crankshaft damper.
  10.  
  11. Remove the timing belt upper and lower covers.
  12.  
  13. Loosen the timing belt and crankshaft sprocket from the crankshaft.
  14.  
  15. Remove the 5 bolts that attach the oil pump to the block and remove the oil pump.
  16.  
  17. Inspect the oil pump case for damage and remove the rear cover.
  18.  
  19. Remove the pump rotors and inspect the inside of the case for excessive wear.
  20.  
  21. Check that the oil relief plunger slides smoothly and check for a broken spring. Repair or replace components as necessary.

To install:

  1. Apply gasket maker or equivalent sealer to the pump. Install the O-ring into the counter bore on the pump body discharge passage. Position the pump onto the crankshaft until seated on the block. Tighten the size M8 fasteners to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm) and size M10 fasteners to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the timing belt and crankshaft sprocket.
  4.  
  5. Install the timing belt cover.
  6.  
  7. Install the crankshaft damper.
  8.  
  9. Install the drive belts and accessories.
  10.  
  11. Refill the cooling system. Install a new oil filter and refill the engine with oil.
  12.  
  13. Road test the vehicle. Check for proper operation as well as leaks.
  14.
