REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



2.0L SOHC Engine

See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air cleaner inlet duct.
  4.  
  5. Label and disconnect the spark plug wires. Remove the ignition coil pack, as described in Engine Electrical .
  6.  
  7. Remove the valve cover retaining bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the valve cover from the engine.
  10.

Before installing the valve cover, clean the valve cover-to-cylinder head mating surfaces. Inspect the spark plug well seals for swelling or cracking and replace, if necessary.

  1. Install the new valve cover gasket.
  2.  
  3. Place the valve cover into position on top of the cylinder head. Tighten the valve cover retaining bolts to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the coil pack assembly, as described in Engine Electrical .
  6.  
  7. Connect the spark plug wires. Follow the labels to assure correct plug wire connections.
  8.  
  9. Install the air cleaner inlet duct.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

2.0L DOHC and 2.4L DOHC Engines

See Figure 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Label and disconnect the spark plug wires. Remove the ignition coil pack, as described in Engine Electrical .
  4.  
  5. Remove the ground strap from the valve cover.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the PCV and breather hoses.
  8.  
  9. Remove the valve cover retaining bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the valve cover from the engine.
  12.  

To install:

Before installing the valve cover, clean the valve cover-to-cylinder head mating surfaces. Inspect the spark plug well seals for swelling or cracking, and replace if necessary.

  1. Install the new valve cover gasket.
  2.  
  3. Apply MOPAR® Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant or equivalent at the camshaft cap corners and at the top edge of the 1 / 2 round seal.

  1. Place the valve cover into position on top of the cylinder head. Tighten the valve cover retaining bolts in the correct sequence as illustrated. Use the 3-step tightening sequence as follows:
    1. 40 inch lbs. (4.5 Nm)
    2.  
    3. 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm)
    4.  
    5. 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
    6.

  3. Connect the PCV and breather hoses.
  4.  
  5. Install the coil pack assembly, as described in Engine Electrical .
  6.  
  7. Connect the spark plug wires. Follow the labels to assure correct plug wire connections.
  8.  
  9. Attach the ground strap to the valve cover.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

2.5L Engine

See Figures 3 through 7

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air intake plenum. Refer to the intake manifold procedure later in this section.
  4.  
  5. Cover the openings of the lower intake manifold to prevent any debris from entering the engine.
  6.  
  7. Label and disconnect the spark plug wires.
  8.

  1. Disconnect the breather hoses. Disconnect the PCV hose, if necessary.
  2.  
  3. Remove the valve cover retaining bolts.
  4.  
  5. Remove the valve cover from the engine.
  6.  

To install:

Before installing the valve cover, clean the valve cover-to-cylinder head mating surfaces.

  1. Install the new valve cover gasket.
  2.  
  3. Place the valve cover into position on top of the cylinder head. Tighten the valve cover retaining bolts to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the breather hoses. Connect the PCV hose, if necessary.
  6.  
  7. Connect the spark plug wires. Follow the labels to assure correct plug wire connections.
  8.  
  9. Install the air intake plenum. Refer to the intake manifold procedure.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.
