Upper Control Arms

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Cirrus, Stratus, Sebring Convertible and Breeze

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

  1. Raise and support the rear of the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheels.
  4.  
  5. Remove the strut-to-rear knuckle bolt on both sides of the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the muffler support bracket from the rear frame rail and the exhaust pipe hanger from the rear suspension crossmember. Allow the exhaust system to hang down.
  8.  
  9. Only on the side of the vehicle that requires upper control arm replacement, perform the following:
    1. Remove the cotter pin and castle nut from the upper control arm ball joint.
    2.  
    3. Using puller tool CT-1106 or equivalent, separate the control arm ball joint stud from the knuckle.
    4.  

  10.  
  11. Place a transmission jack and a block of wood underneath the center of the rear suspension crossmember for support.
  12.  
  13. If equipped with an Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), remove the wheel speed sensor cable routing clips from the brackets on both upper control arms.
  14.

  1. Remove the 4 rear suspension crossmember-to-frame rail mounting bolts.
  2.  
  3. Carefully lower the rear suspension crossmember just far enough to access the upper control arm pivot bar attaching bolts. Be careful not to put a strain on the flexible rear brake hoses.
  4.  
  5. Remove the 2 bolts that mount the upper control arm to the suspension crossmember. Remove the control arm.
  6.  
  7. Transfer any required components to the replacement control arm.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Align the upper control arm pivot bar with the mounting holes in the rear suspension crossmember. Install and tighten the 2 crossmember attaching bolts to 79 ft. lbs. (107 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Using the transmission jack, raise the rear suspension crossmember up to the frame rails and loosely install the 4 mounting bolts.
  4.

  1. Place an appropriate size drift through the positioning hole on each side of the crossmember and into the locating hole in each frame rail. This is required to properly position the crossmember in the body of the vehicle. Then tighten the 4 crossmember mounting bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Remove the drifts from the crossmember.
  4.  
  5. Install the upper control arm ball joint stud in the knuckle. Install the ball joint stud castle nut and tighten to 50 ft. lbs. (67 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.
  6.  
  7. Remove the transmission jack.
  8.  
  9. Install the muffler support bracket to the frame rail. Install the rear exhaust pipe hanger to the crossmember.
  10.  
  11. If equipped with an Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), install the wheel speed sensor cable routing clip onto the upper control arm mounting brackets. Install and tighten the attaching bolts.
  12.  
  13. Install the strut clevis brackets to the rear knuckles and install the bolts. Tighten the bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the rear wheels. Tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to 95 ft. lbs. (129 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Check the rear wheel alignment. If adjustment is necessary, have it perfomed by a reputable alignment shop.
  20.  

Sebring Coupe and Avenger

See Figures 4 and 5

The following procedures include the removal of load bearing components; therefore, the vehicle's chassis and axle weight must be supported separately, requiring the use of two separate lifting devices.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the appropriate wheel and tire assembly.
  4.  
  5. Support the lower arm assembly, and remove the mounting bolt connecting the upper control arm to the knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the four bolts connecting the upper arm brackets to the subframe, then remove the upper control arm assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the mounting brackets from the control arm.
  10.

To install:
  1. Install the mounting brackets to the control arm and tighten the mounting bolts to 41 ft. lbs. (57 Nm).

  1. Install the upper control arm to the subframe and tighten the bolts to 28 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the control arm to the knuckle and tighten the through-bolt to 71 ft. lbs. (98 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the wheel/tire assembly and lower the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Check the rear wheel alignment. If adjustment is necessary, have it perfomed by a reputable alignment shop.
