REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Colt and 1990-91 Vista
  1. Drain the cooling system.
  2.  
  3. Remove the drive belt and water pump pulley.
  4.  
  5. Remove the timing belt covers and timing belt tensioner.
  6.  
  7. Remove the water pump bolts and alternator bracket.
  8.  
  9. Remove the water pump retaining bolts, it is important to observe the location of each bolt, they are different lengths.
  10.  
  11. Remove the water pump.
  12.  

The pump is not rebuildable. Check for driveshaft side to side play, if excessive replace the pump. If there are signs of damage or leakage from the seals or vent hole, the unit must be replaced.

  1. Discard the O-ring in the front end of the water pipe. Install a new O-ring coated with water.
  2.  
  3. Using a new gasket, mount the water pump and alternator bracket on the engine. Torque the bolts with a head marked "4" to 9-11 ft. lbs. (12-15 Nm); the bolts with a head marked "7" to 14-20 ft. lbs. (20-27 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Complete the remainder of installation in the reverse order of removal procedure. Fill the system with coolant and check for leaks.

1992-93 Vista
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the engine coolant.
  2.  
  3. Remove the drive belts and move the accessories out of the way, if necessary. Remove the alternator bracket.
  4.  
  5. Align the crankshaft timing mark to TDC of No. 1 cylinder. Remove the timing belt cover and timing belt as outlined in this section.
  6.  
  7. Remove the water pump.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Clean the gasket mating surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Install the water pump with a new gasket. The water pump bolts are different sizes. Make sure they are properly installed before tightening. Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm). Install a new O-ring for the 2.4L engine.
  4.  
  5. Install the timing belt and cover.
  6.  
  7. Install the accessories and belts.
  8.  
  9. Install the remaining components.
  10.  
  11. Fill the engine with coolant, start the engine and check for leaks.
  12.
