GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The power antenna automatically raises the antenna mast to its full height whenever the radio and ignition are turned ON . The antenna retracts when either the ignition switch or the radio is turned OFF . The power antenna assembly and antenna relay are located in the trunk.

DIAGNOSIS & TESTING

Antenna Motor

With the harness connector connected and the antenna mast extending and retracting, use a voltmeter and check the voltage readings.

  1. Using a 12 volt DC power supply, connect the positive lead to terminal 1 and the negative lead to terminal 2; the antenna mast should extend.
  2.
  3. When the antenna is fully extended, there should be continuity between terminals 4 and 5.
  4.
  5. Using a 12 volt DC power supply, connect the negative lead to terminal 1 and the positive lead to terminal 2; the antenna mast should retract.
  6.
  7. When the antenna is fully retracted, there should be continuity between terminals 3 and 4.
  8.
  9. During the extension and retraction process, there should be continuity between terminals 3, 4 and 5.
  10.
  11. If the results do not agree with those in this procedure, replace the antenna assembly.
  12.

Antenna Motor Relay

With the harness connector connected and the antenna mast extending and retracting, use a voltmeter and check the voltage readings.

  1. With the antenna mast extending, there should be (-)1-1V at the top left corner (No. 1) terminal. There should be 10-13V at the upper right corner (No. 4) terminal.
  2.
  3. With the antenna mast retracting, there should be 10-13V at the top left corner (No. 1) terminal. There should be (-)1-1V at the upper right corner (No. 4) terminal.
  4.
  5. If the voltage readings do not agree with those in this procedure, replace the relay.
  6.

Power Antenna Assembly

Be sure the antenna mast is retracted before operation. Disconnect the antenna relay before removing the high floor side panel.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the trunk room side trim panel and high floor side panel.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the harness connector, ground wire, antenna lead wire and the drain hose.
  4.
  5. Remove the antenna assembly-to-fender nuts and the assembly from the trunk room side.
  6.
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedures. Check the operation of the power antenna mast.
  8.

Mast Assembly with Cable
  1. Remove the power antenna assembly-to-fender ring nut and cap.
  2.
  3. Turn the radio ON and allow the antenna mast to rise. When the antenna is fully extended, pull the mast from the tube.
  4.
  5. To install the new mast, fully extend it, straighten the rack cable (if bent), position the rack cable teeth toward the outside of the vehicle and insert the rack cable into the motor tube.
  6.
  7. Once installed in the tube, turn the rack cable 90 degrees (teeth facing the front of the vehicle) to engage the gear motor.
  8.

To check if the rack cable is engaged, lightly pull on the mast; if it not engaged with the gear motor, it will pull out. Straighten the rack cable and repeat the installation steps.

  1. While holding the antenna mast in an upright position, turn the radio OFF and all the mast retracts into the tube.
  2.
  3. To complete the installation, reverse the removal procedures. Turn the radio ON and OFF to check the operation; make sure it extends and retracts smoothly.
  4.
