SERVICE PRECAUTIONS





Always turn the key OFF and isolate both ends of a circuit whenever testing for short or continuity.
 
Always disconnect solenoids and switches from the harness before measuring for continuity, resistance or energizing by way of a 12 volts source.
 
When disconnecting connectors, inspect for damaged or pushed-out pins, corrosion, loose wires, etc. Service if required.

Testing
  1. Engine cranks, but won't start:

  1. Spark is insufficient or does not occur at all, at spark plug:

    Check ignition coil.
     
    Check distributor (1.5L, 1.8L and 2.4L SOHC engines).
     
    Check crank angle sensor (1.6L, 2.0L DOHC engines).
     
    Check power transistor.
     
    Check spark plugs.
     

  2.  

  1. Spark is good:

    Check the ignition timing.
     

  2.  

  1. Engine Idles Roughly or Stalls:

    Check spark plugs.
     
    Check ignition timing.
     
    Check ignition coil.
     
    Check spark plug cables.
     

  2.  

  1. Poor Acceleration:

    Check ignition timing.
     
    Check ignition coil.
     
    Check spark plug cables.
     

  2.  

  1. Engine overheats or consumes excessive fuel:

    Check ignition timing.
     

  2.
