CAUTION
When working on fuel tanks, be sure to disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. The fuel system pressure must be relieved. See the Fuel Pump procedures, above.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the fuel tank using an approved tank pump and container. Remove and drain the remaining fuel using the drain plug, if so equipped.
  4.  
  5. Remove the fuel cap.
  6.  
  7. Remove the spare tire and carrier (2WD Vista) or the fuel tank protector (4WD Vista).
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the fuel gauge unit and fuel hoses that can be accessed before lowering the tank. Disconnect the fuel pump connectors.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the filler hose.
  12.  
  13. Place a floor jack and a piece of wood under the tank before removing the straps or retaining bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the retaining straps and the tank retaining bolts, if so equipped.
  16.  
  17. Slowly lower the tank and disconnect any electrical or fuel connections. Be care not to damage the fuel fittings.
  18.  
  19. Remove all hardware from the old tank if installing a new tank. Remove the fuel pump nuts and remove the pump.
  20.  

To install:
  1. Install all hardware to the tank, if installing a new tank. Always use new gaskets around the fuel pump and gauge unit. Install the pump and gauge unit. Torque the nuts or bolts to 1.4-2.2 ft. lbs. (2-3 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Slowly raise the tank and connect any electrical or fuel connections. Be care not to damage the fuel fittings.
  4.  
  5. Install the retaining straps or tank retaining bolts, if so equipped. Torque the bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the filler hose.
  8.  
  9. Connect the fuel gauge unit and fuel hoses that can be accessed after raising the tank. Connect the fuel pump connectors.
  10.  
  11. Install the spare tire and carrier (2WD Vista) or the fuel tank protector (4WD Vista).
  12.  
  13. Install the fuel cap.
  14.  
  15. Install the drain plug, if so equipped. Torque the plug to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Refill the tank and check for leaks. Connect the negative battery cable.
