The air cleaner contains a dry filter element that keeps most dirt and dust from entering the engine via the throttle body. Never run the engine (other than for adjusting) without a filter element. The dirt and dust entering the engine can cause expensive damage to the pistons, bearings, etc.

Proper maintenance of the air cleaner element is vital. A clogged filter element will fail to supply sufficient fresh air to induction system and engine, causing an over-rich fuel/air mixture. Such a condition will result in poor engine performance and economy. Periodical replacing of the filter element (refer to the maintenance chart) will help your car last longer and run better.

To replace the air cleaner filter element:

  1. Loosen the side mounted spring clips.
  3. Lift off the top of the air cleaner and remove the filter element. On some models a charcoal filter is also located in the air cleaner. This is for vapor control and is not to be disturbed.
  5. If the element is not too clogged by dirt, use compressed air and clean the element. Hold the air nozzle at least 50mm from the inside screen (or the element).
  7. Replace the filter element if mileage or dirt clogging is indicated.
  9. Install the air cleaner element into position and secure the cover.
