REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Loosen the lug nuts.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheels.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering shaft-to-pinion coupling bolt.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the tie rod ends with a separator.
  10.  
  11. Remove the clamps or clamp and bolts securing the rack to the crossmember and remove the unit from the vehicle.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Install the rubber mount for the gear box with the slit on the downside.
  2.  
  3. The remainder of installation is the reverse order of the removal procedures. Torque as follows:
  4.  



Rack-to-crossmember-45-60 ft. lbs. (61-81 Nm).
 
Coupling bolt-22-25 ft. lbs. (27-34 Nm).
 
Tie-rod nuts-11-25 ft. lbs. (15-34 Nm).
 

  1. Road test the vehicle.
  2.

  1. Loosen the lug nuts.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheels.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering shaft-to-pinion coupling bolt.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the tie rod ends with a separator.
  10.  
  11. Remove the crossmember support bracket from the crossmember on the right side of the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rear roll stopper-to-center member bolt and move the rear roll stopper forward.
  14.  
  15. Unbolt the rack from the crossmember.
  16.  

The rack is most easily removed using a ratchet and long extension, working from the engine compartment side.

  1. Pull the rack out the right side of the vehicle. Pull it slowly to avoid damage.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Installation is the reverse order of the removal procedures. Torque the rack clamp bolts to 43-58 ft. lbs. (58-79 Nm), the tie rod nuts to 17-25 ft. lbs. (25-34 Nm) and the coupling bolt to 22-25 ft. lbs. (27-34 Nm). Fill the system and road test the vehicle.

1990-91 4WD Vista
  1. Remove the steering column.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front wheels.
  6.  
  7. Using a separator, disconnect the tie rod from the knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the steering shaft joint at the rack.
  10.  
  11. Remove the air cleaner.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rack attaching bolts from the rear of the No. 2 crossmember. The bolts are most easily accessed using a long extension and working from the top of the engine compartment.
  14.  
  15. Remove the rear roll stopper-to-center member bolt and move the rear roll stopper forward.
  16.  
  17. From under the vehicle, remove the gear box mounting bolts from the front of the No. 2 crossmember and pull out and to the left on the rack.
  18.  
  19. Lower the rack until the left edge of the left feed tube contacts the lower part of the left fender shield. At this point, remove the left and right feed tubes.
  20.  
  21. Remove the rack from the vehicle.
  22.  

To install:
  1. Position the rack to the No. 2 crossmember and connect the left and right feed tubes.
  2.  
  3. Install the rack, mounting brackets, bushing and retaining bolts. Torque the bolts to 43-58 ft. lbs. (60-80 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the tie rods to the steering knuckle and install the retaining nuts. Torque the tie rod end retaining nuts to 17-25 ft. lbs. (24-34 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the wheel assemblies.
  8.  
  9. Install the steering column and connect the steering shaft joint to the rack shaft. Torque the steering shaft-to-rack bolts to 22-25 ft. lbs. (30-35 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle. Install the air cleaner.
  12.  
  13. Replenish the powering fluid. Start the engine and check for leaks.
