REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

3.3L Engine

See Figures 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor lead wire and remove the EGR tube from the exhaust manifold.

  1. These manifolds are thin-wall designs to save weight. Inspect the manifold carefully for cracks or other damage. Check for distortion against a straightedge or thickness gauge. Replace manifold if required.
  2.
  3. Remove all traces of the old manifold gasket and clean both gasket mating surfaces.
  4.

To install:
  1. Install the exhaust manifold and a new manifold gasket to the cylinder head. Install the retainer bolts and tighten to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  2.
  3. Reconnect the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold and tighten the nuts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  4.
  5. Install the EGR tube back onto the manifold.
  6.
  7. Install the heat shield to the manifold. Lower the vehicle, if necessary.
  8.
  9. Attach the electrical connector at the oxygen sensor.
  10.
  11. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Operate the vehicle and inspect for exhaust leaks.
  12.

3.5L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the exhaust pipes from the exhaust manifold.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor electrical wiring.
  6.
  7. Lower the vehicle and remove the screws attaching the heat shield to the exhaust manifold.
  8.
  9. Remove the manifold attaching bolts, then remove the manifold from the cylinder head.
  10.
  11. Inspect the manifold for damage or cracks. Check for distortion against a straightedge or thickness gauge. Replace manifold if required.
  12.
  13. Remove all traces of the old manifold gasket and clean both gasket mating surfaces.
  14.

To install:
  1. Install the new manifold gasket and exhaust manifold to the cylinder head. Install the retainer bolts and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  2.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.
  5. Reconnect the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold and tighten nuts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  6.
  7. Lower the vehicle. Install the heat shield to the manifold and tighten the retaining screws to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
  8.
  9. Reattach the electrical wiring on the oxygen sensor.
  10.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable. Operate the vehicle and inspect for exhaust leaks.
