CAUTION
The EPA warns that prolonged contact with used engine oil may cause a number of skin disorders, including cancer! You should make every effort to minimize your exposure to used engine oil. Protective gloves should be worn when changing the oil. Wash your hands and any other exposed skin areas as soon as possible after exposure to used engine oil. Soap and water, or waterless hand cleaner should be used.

3.3L Engine

The lubrication system is a full flow filtration system pressure feed type. Oil from the oil pan is pumped by an internal gear type oil pump directly coupled to the crankshaft. Its pressure is regulated by a relief valve located in the timing chain case cover. The oil is pumped through an oil filter and feeds a main oil gallery. This oil gallery feeds oil under pressure to the main and rod bearings and the camshaft bearings. Passages in the cylinder block feed oil to the hydraulic lifters and rocker shaft brackets which feeds the rocker arm pivots.

It is necessary to remove the oil pan, oil pump pick-up tube and timing Chain Case Cover (CCC) to service the oil pump rotors. The oil pump pressure relief valve can be serviced by removing the oil pan and oil pickup tube.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable and drain the cooling system.
  2.  
  3. Remove the radiator assembly.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Drain the engine oil. Remove the oil filter.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the sway bar and place it to the rear of the vehicle to gain access to the oil pan.
  10.  
  11. Remove the transmission support brackets and inspection cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove the oil pan and the oil pump pick-up tube.
  14.  
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Remove the accessory drive belts and tensioner pulley bracket.
  18.  
  19. Remove the power steering pump and set aside. Remove the air compressor mounting bolts and set compressor aside. Remove the compressor mounting bracket. It is not necessary to disconnect the refrigerant lines or evacuate the refrigerant from the air conditioning system.
  20.  
  21. Using an appropriate puller, remove the crankshaft pulley.
  22.  
  23. Remove the tensioner pulley bracket.
  24.  
  25. Remove the camshaft sensor from the chain case cover.
  26.  
  27. Remove the timing chain case cover mounting bolts and the cover from the front of the engine.
  28.  
  29. Clean the gasket material from the mating surfaces of the cover and the block.
  30.  
  31. Remove the oil pump cover retaining screws from the timing cover. Lift off the oil pump cover.
  32.  
  33. Remove the pump rotors. Wash all parts in solvent and inspect carefully for damage or wear.
  34.  

To install:
  1. Clean all parts well. Assemble the oil pump with new parts as required. Install the inner rotor with chamfer facing the cast iron oil pump cover.
  2.  
  3. Install the pump cover and tighten the fasteners to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Prime the oil pump prior to installation by filling the rotor cavity with clean engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Remove the crankshaft oil seal from the front cover.
  8.  
  9. Install a new cover gasket and O-ring onto the cover.
  10.  
  11. Rotate the crankshaft so the oil pump drive flats are vertical. Position the oil pump inner rotor so the mating flats are in the same position as the crankshaft drive flats.
  12.  
  13. Install the front cover making sure the pump is correctly engaged on the crankshaft, or severe damage may result.
  14.  
  15. Install the chain case cover screws and snug the two bottom screws and the top center screw. Ensure the cover is seated to the block then tighten all screws to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the oil seal and the crankshaft damper.
  18.  
  19. Install the tensioner pulley bracket and the cam sensor.
  20.  
  21. Install the air conditioning compressor to the mounting bracket.
  22.  
  23. Install the accessory drive belt.
  24.  
  25. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Tighten the oil pan drain plug and install a new oil filter.
  26.  
  27. Install the oil pump pick-up tube and oil pan. Install the transaxle inspection cover, if removed.
  28.  
  29. Fill the crankcase with clean engine oil to the proper level. Install a new oil filter.
  30.  
  31. Install radiator assembly. Check condition of radiator hoses. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  32.  
  33. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Run engine and check for leaks. Verify correct oil pressure with a gauge.
  34.  

3.5L Engine

The lubrication system is a full flow filtration pressure feed type. Oil, stored in the pan, is taken in and discharged by a rotor type oil pump directly coupled to the crankshaft and its pressure is regulated by a relief valve. The oil is fed through an oil filter and to the crankshaft journals from the oil gallery in the cylinder block. This gallery also feeds oil under pressure to the cylinder heads. It then flows to each cylinder head through passages to the camshaft journals, the rocker shafts to the rocker arms and hydraulic adjusters.

It is necessary to remove the oil pan, oil pump pick-up tube and oil pump body to service the oil pump rotors. The oil pump pressure relief valve can be serviced by removing the oil pan.

Please note that the timing belt must be removed to access the oil pump behind the crankshaft drive sprocket. It is good practice to turn the crankshaft to TDC No. 1 cylinder compression stroke (firing position) before starting disassembly. This should align all timing marks and be a good point of reference for all work to follow.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  


CAUTION
Do not open the radiator drain or the coolant pressure bottle cap with the system hot and under pressure or serious burns from coolant may occur.

  1. The cooling system must be drained and the radiator removed for access to the timing belt covers and vibration damper. Use the following procedure.
    1. Place a drain pan under the radiator. Open the radiator drain fitting located at the lower right side of the radiator. Do NOT use pliers to open the plastic drain fitting.
    2.  
    3. Remove the coolant pressure bottle cap and open the thermostat bleed valve.
    4.  
    5. Remove the radiator hoses and radiator for access to the timing belt covers and crankshaft damper.
    6.

  1. Remove the accessory drive belts.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Place a drain pan under the vehicle and drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove the oil filter. Remove the oil pan, oil pump pick-up tube and windage tray/oil pan gasket.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the crankshaft damper using a suitable puller tool. Remove the timing belt covers.
  10.  
  11. Place marks on the timing belt to aid installation. Line up the marks on the camshaft sprockets to marks on the rear timing belt covers before removing the timing belt using the recommended procedure.
  12.  
  13. Remove the timing belt. Inspect timing belt for cracks or excessive wear and replace if necessary.
  14.  
  15. Remove the crankshaft sprocket using a suitable puller tool.
  16.  
  17. Remove the oil pump mounting screws and the pump from the engine.
  18.  
  19. Remove the oil pump cover retaining screws and lift off the oil pump cover.
  20.  
  21. Remove the pump rotors. Wash all parts in solvent and inspect carefully for damage or wear.
  22.  

To install:
  1. Clean all parts well. There should be no traces of old gasket/sealer on any components.
  2.  
  3. Assemble the oil pump with new parts as required.
  4.  
  5. Install the pump cover and tighten the fasteners to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Prime the oil pump prior to installation by filling the rotor cavity with clean engine oil.
  8.  
  9. Install the oil pump over the crankshaft and carefully into position. Tighten the retaining screws as follows:

M8 screws-21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm)
 
M10 screws-40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)
 

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Tighten the oil pan drain plug and install a new oil filter.
  2.  
  3. Install the oil pump pick-up tube, windage tray/oil pan gasket and the oil pan. Tighten the oil pan fasteners to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm). Pay attention to sealing the oil pan gasket and its integral windage tray.
  4.  
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Install the crankshaft sprocket using tool C-4685C1, thrust bearing, washer and 12mm bolt to draw the sprocket onto the crankshaft.
  8.  
  9. Install the timing belt and set to the correct tension using the recommended procedure.
  10.  
  11. Install the timing belt covers and install the vibration damper using tool L-4524, thrust bearing and washer plate or equivalent damper installation tools.
  12.  
  13. Install the accessory drive belts and adjust to the correct tension.
  14.  
  15. Install the radiator into the vehicle. Install the radiator hoses.
  16.  
  17. Refill and bleed the cooling system.
  18.  
  19. Refill the engine with the correct amount of clean SAE 5W-30 OR SAE 10W-30 engine oil only. Do not mix the 2 grades of oil.
  20.  
  21. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  22.  
  23. Run the engine. Check for leaks and proper oil pressure.
  24.

  1. To remove the relief valve, proceed as follows:
  2.  

  1. Drill a 1 / 8 inch (3.175mm) hole into the relief valve retainer cap and insert a self-threading sheet metal screw into the cap.
  2.  
  3. Clamp the screw into a vise and while supporting the Chain Case Cover (CCC), remove the cap by tapping the CCC using a soft rubber or plastic hammer. Discard the retainer cap and remove the spring and relief valve.
  4.  

  1. Remove the oil pump cover screws, and lift off the cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the pump rotors.
  4.  
  5. Wash all parts in a suitable solvent and inspect carefully for damage or wear.
  6.  
  7. The mating surface of the CCC should be smooth. Replace the oil pump cover is scratched or grooved.
  8.  
  9. Lay a straightedge across the pump cover surface. If a 0.003 inch (0.076mm) feeler gauge can be inserted between the cover and straightedge, the cover should be replaced with a new one.
  10.  
  11. Measure the thickness and diameter of the outer rotor. If the outer rotor thickness measures 0.301 inch (7.64mm) or less, or if the diameter is 3.148 inch (79.95mm) or less, replace the outer rotor with a new one.
  12.  
  13. If the inner rotor thickness measures 0.301 inch (7.64mm) or less, replace the inner rotor with a new one.
  14.  
  15. Slide the outer rotor into the CCC, press to one side with your fingers and measure the clearance between the rotor and the CCC. If measurement is 0.015 inch (0.39mm) or more, replace the CCC with a new one only if the outer rotor is in specification.
  16.  
  17. Install the inner rotor into the CCC. If the clearance between the inner and outer rotors is 0.008 inch (0.203mm) or more, replace both rotors with new ones.
  18.  
  19. Place a straightedge across the face of the CCC, between both holes. If a feeler gauge of 0.004 inch (0.102mm) or larger can be inserted between the rotors and the straightedge, replace the pump assembly with a new one only if both rotors are in specifications.
  20.  
  21. Inspect the oil pressure relief valve plunger for scoring and free operation in its bore. Small marks may be removed with 400-grit wet or dry sandpaper.
  22.  
  23. The relief valve spring has a free length of approximately 1.95 inch (49.5mm) and it should test between 19.5-20.5 lbs. (87-91 N) when compressed to 1.344 inch (34mm). Replace the spring if it fails to meet these specifications.
  24.  
  25. If the oil pressure was low and the oil pump is within specifications, inspect for worn engine bearings or other reasons for low oil pressure loss.
  26.  

To assemble:
  1. Assemble the oil pump, using new parts as required.
  2.  

Install the inner rotor with the chamfer facing the cast iron oil pump cover.

  1. Tighten the cover screws to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Prime the oil pump before installation by filling the rotor cavity with engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Install the CCC slowly to the engine. Refer to the oil pump removal and installation procedures in this section.
  6.  

3.5L Engine
  1. Remove the oil pump cover retaining screws and lift off the oil pump cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the pump rotors. Wash all parts in solvent and inspect carefully for damage or wear.
  4.  
  5. If the relief valve is to be removed, remove the cotter pin and drill a 1 / 8 -inch hole in the relief valve retainer cap, then insert a self-threading sheet metal screw into the cap. Clamp the screw in a vise and while supporting the oil pump body, remove the cap by tapping the oil pump body with a soft hammer. Discard the retainer cap and remove the spring and relief valve. The relief spring free length should be 1.95 inch (49.5mm) and the relief valve free of scoring. Small marks on the plunger and in the bore may be removed with 400-grit wet or dry sandpaper.
  6.  
  7. Inspect the oil pump carefully. Lay a straightedge across the pump cover surface. If a 0.003 inch (0.076mm) feeler gauge can be inserted between the cover and straightedge, the cover should be replaced.
  8.  
  9. Measure thickness and diameter of outer rotor. If outer rotor thickness measures 0.3695 inch (9.385mm) or less or if the diameter of the rotor is 3.141 inch (79.781mm) or less, replace the rotor. If the inner rotor thickness measures 0.3695 inch (9.385mm) or less, replace the inner rotor. Slide the outer rotor into the body, press to one side with fingers and measure clearance between rotor and body. If measurement is 0.015 inch (0.381mm) or more, replace the body only if the outer rotor is in specification. Install inner rotor into pump body. If clearance between inner and outer rotors is 0.008 inch (0.203mm) or more, replace both rotors. Place a straightedge across the face of body between the bolt holes. If a feeler gauge of 0.004 inch (0.101mm) or more can be inserted between the rotors and the straightedge, replace the pump assembly ONLY if the rotors are in spec. If engine oil pressure has been diagnosed as being low and the pump is within specifications, inspect for worn engine bearings or other reasons for oil pressure loss.
  10.  

To assemble:
  1. Clean all parts well. There should be no traces of old gasket/sealer on any components.
  2.  
  3. Assemble the oil pump with new parts as required.
  4.  
  5. Install the pump cover and tighten the fasteners to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Prime the oil pump prior to installation by filling the rotor cavity with clean engine oil.
  8.  
  9. Install the oil pump over the crankshaft and carefully into position. Tighten the retaining screws as follows:
