REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

3.3L Engine

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

Rocker arms are installed on a rocker arm shaft attached to the cylinder head with four bolts and retainers. Use care when working with valvetrain components. Any parts that are to be reused must be installed in their original locations.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2.

CAUTION
Fuel injection systems remain under pressure, even after the engine has been turned OFF . The fuel system pressure must be relieved before disconnecting any fuel lines. Failure to do so may result in fire and/or personal injury.

  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to Fuel System .
  2.
  3. Remove the upper intake manifold assembly.
  4.
  5. Disconnect and label the spark plug wires from the plugs. Remove by pulling on the boot in a straight out in line with the spark plug.
  6.

  1. Disconnect the closed crankcase ventilation system and the evaporative control system from the cylinder head cover.
  2.
  3. Remove the cylinder head cover and gasket from the engine.
  4.

  1. Remove the four rocker shaft bolts and retainers. Remove the rocker arms and shafts from the engine.
  2.

To install:
  1. Install rocker arms and shaft assemblies with the stamped steel retainers in the four positions. Tighten the retainer bolts slowly to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm), in three even progressions starting at the centermost bolts and working outward.
  2.

After installation, allow the tappets to bleed down for 20 minutes before operating the engine.

  1. Clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head cover gasket. Inspect the cylinder head cover and straighten out if distorted.
  2.
  3. Install the cylinder head cover with new gasket in place. Tighten fasteners to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  4.
  5. Reconnect the closed crankcase ventilation system and the evaporative control system.
  6.
  7. Reconnect the spark plug wires making sure that each wire is connected to the correct spark plug.
  8.
  9. Install the upper intake manifold assembly and reconnect the negative battery cable.

3.5L Engine

See Figures 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8

The rocker arm shafts are hollow and are used as a lubrication oil duct. The rocker arm shaft assembly on the right side of the engine has an oil passage hole from the cylinder head located at the third rocker shaft support. The rocker arm shaft assembly on the left side of the engine has an oil passage hole from the cylinder head located at the second rocker shaft support. Keeping these passages clean and open to lubrication is a key to avoiding valvetrain noise. Note that the intake and exhaust rocker arms are different. They should be identified before disassembly. Hydraulic valve lash adjusters are inside the rocker arms. They are precision units installed in machined openings in the valve actuating ends of the rocker arms. DO NOT disassemble the hydraulic lash adjuster from the rocker arm assembly. Damage to the adjuster or rocker arm will occur.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2.

CAUTION
Fuel injection systems remain under pressure even after the engine has been turned OFF . The fuel system pressure must be relieved before disconnecting any fuel lines. Failure to do so may result in fire and/or personal injury.

  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to Fuel System .
  2.
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly and the intake manifold plenum. Cover the lower intake manifold during service.
  4.
  5. Remove the cylinder head covers.
  6.
  7. Remove the rocker arm assembly mounting bolts and remove the assembly from the engine.

  1. Inspect the rocker arms for wear or damage. Inspect the roller for scuffing or wear. Replace assembly as necessary.
  2.

Do not remove the lash adjusters from the rocker arm assembly. The rocker arm and the adjuster are serviced as an assembly.

  1. Identify the rocker arm assemblies and rocker arms and disassemble the shaft as follows:
    1. Thread a nut, washer and spacer onto a 4mm screw.
    2.
    3. Insert and tighten a 4mm screw into the dowel pin on the shaft.
    4.
    5. Loosen the nut on the screw. This will pull the dowel pin from the shaft support.
    6.
    7. Remove the rocker arms and pedestals keeping in order.
    8.
    9. Check the oil holes for restrictions with a small wire and clean as required.

To install:
  1. Assemble the rocker shaft as follows:
    1. Install the rocker arms and pedestals onto the shaft keeping in original order.
    2.
    3. Press the dowel pins into the pedestals until they bottom out in the pedestals.

  1. Position the camshaft so that the timing mark on the right camshaft timing belt sprocket aligns with the timing mark on the rear timing belt cover and the timing mark on the left sprocket is 45 degrees from the mark on the rear timing belt cover. There will be no load on the shaft during installation. Install the rocker shafts so the identification marks are facing toward the front of the engine.
