3.3L Engine

On some models, the right and left-hand rocker arm (valve) cover gaskets may not be interchangeable-match up the old gaskets before installation.

  1. Disconnect the negative - battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper intake manifold assembly. Refer to the intake manifold procedures appearing later in this section.
  4.  
  5. Label each spark plug cable before it is removed. Disconnect the spark plug wires by pulling straight out on the boot.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the closed ventilation system and evaporation control system from the cylinder head cover.
  8.  
  9. On the left cylinder head cover you will need to remove the DIS coil. Loosen and remove the rocker arm cover mounting bolts. Remove the rocker arm cover from the cylinder head.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Clean the cylinder head cover gasket surface of dirt, oil and old gasket material. Inspect the cover for distortion and straighten the cover if needed.
  2.  
  3. Clean the head rail, if necessary. Install a new gasket and tighten the rocker arm cover fasteners to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the DIS coil on the left cylinder head cover.
  6.  
  7. Install the closed crankcase ventilation system and evaporation control system.
  8.  
  9. Install the spark plug wires. Make certain that the correct cables are connected to its respective spark plugs.
  10.  
  11. Install the upper intake manifold assembly. Refer to the intake manifold procedures appearing later in this section.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative - battery cable.
  14.  

3.5L Engine

See Figures 4, 5 and 6

  1. Disconnect the negative - battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air cleaner and upper intake manifold assembly. Refer to the intake manifold procedures appearing later in this section.
  4.  
  5. Cover the lower intake manifold with a suitable cover during service.
  6.

  1. Disconnect and relocate the spark plug wires.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the A/C compressor mounting bracket and pull away from the cylinder head.
  4.  
  5. Remove the spark plug tube nut and O-ring.
  6.

  1. Remove the rocker arm cover bolts, then separate the cover from the head.

To install:
  1. Clean the cylinder head and cover mating surfaces. Install a new gasket.
  2.  
  3. Install the cylinder head cover bolts and tighten to 105 inch. lbs. (12 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the spark plug tube nut and O-ring, tighten to 60 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the A/C compressor mounting bracket to the engine and tighten to 200 inch lbs. (23 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the spark plug wires in there correct locations.
  10.  
  11. Remove the covering from the lower intake manifold, then install the upper intake manifold and air cleaner assemblies.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.
