REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure using the recommended procedure.
  2.
  3. Rotate the engine to Top Dead Center (TDC) on No. 1 cylinder. This provides a reference point.
  4.
  5. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  6.

  1. Drain the cooling system. Remove the radiator and cooling fan assemblies.
  2.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Place a drain pan under the engine oil pan and drain the engine oil.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the sway bar and place it to the rear of the vehicle to gain access to the oil pan.
  6.
  7. Remove the transaxle supports brackets and inspection cover.
  8.
  9. Remove the engine oil pan and oil pump pickup.
  10.
  11. Remove the accessory drive belt(s).
  12.
  13. Remove the power steering pump and set aside. It may be necessary to also remove the air conditioning compressor and set aside.
  14.
  15. Remove the crankshaft damper using a puller to draw the damper from the crankshaft.
  16.
  17. Remove the tensioner pulley bracket.
  18.
  19. Remove the cam sensor from the chain case cover.
  20.
  21. Remove the timing chain front cover and remove the front cover oil seal.
  22.

To install:
  1. Clean all parts well. Use care to remove all old sealer and gasket material from the timing chain cover.
  2.

The crankshaft oil seal must be removed to insure correct oil pump engagement.

  1. Remove the old oil seal from the timing case cover. Be sure that the mating surfaces for the timing chain cover gasket are clean and free of any burrs. Rotate the crankshaft so that the oil pump drive flats are vertical. Position the oil pump inner rotor so the mating flats are in the same position as the crankshaft drive flats. Install the timing chain front cover using new gasket and O-rings. Make sure the oil pump is engaged on the crankshaft correctly or severe damage may result.
  2.
  3. Install the chain case cover screws. Snug down the two bottom screws and the top center screw. Make sure the cover is seated on the block then tighten all the other screws to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  4.
  5. Install a new front cover oil seal.
  6.
  7. Install the crankshaft damper and tighten the center bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  8.
  9. Install the tensioner pulley bracket.
  10.
  11. Install the cam position sensor.
  12.
  13. Install the accessory drive belt(s) and adjust to the proper tension.
  14.
  15. Install the oil pump pickup tube and the oil pan.
  16.
  17. Install the transaxle supports brackets and inspection cover.
  18.
  19. Install the power steering pump and air conditioning compressor, if removed.
  20.
  21. Connect the front sway bar.
  22.
  23. Install the radiator and cooling fan assemblies.
  24.
  25. Refill the engine with the correct amount of clean SAE 5W-30 OR SAE 10W-30 engine oil only. Do not mix the 2 grades of oil. A filter change is recommended.
  26.
  27. Refill and bleed the cooling system.
  28.
  29. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  30.
  31. Test run the engine and check for leaks.
