REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

The valve springs are removed and installed as part of the valve removal and installation procedures.

INSPECTION

3.3L Engine

Place the valve spring on a flat surface next to a carpenter's square. Measure the height of the spring, and rotate the spring against the edge of the square to measure squareness. The free length of the valve spring should be approximately 1.909 inch (48.5mm). If the spring height varies by more than 1 / 16 inch (1.6mm) from side-to-side and from spring-to-spring, or if the squareness exceeds 2° maximum for new springs and 4° for used springs, replace the spring with a new one. All springs do not need to be replaced at the same time, but it is a good idea.

Have the valve springs tested for spring pressure at the installed and compressed (installed height minus valve lift) height using a valve spring tester. The standard specifications are: 95-100 lbs. (422-444 N) of pressure at the closed valve installed height of 1.570 inch (39.8mm) and 207-229 lbs. (920-1018 N) of pressure at the open valve height of 1.169 inch (29.7mm). The springs should be within plus or minus one pound of each other. Replace the springs as necessary.

3.5L Engine

Place the valve spring on a flat surface next to a carpenter's square. Measure the height of the spring, and rotate the spring against the edge of the square to measure squareness. The free length of the valve spring should be approximately 1.7811 inch (45.24mm)-intake and 1.7992 inch (45.70)-exhaust.

The standard specifications are:

90.3-99.7 lbs. (402-444 N)-intake and 80.7-89.3 lbs. (359-397 N)-exhaust, of pressure at the closed valve installed height of 1.4961 inch (38.0mm)

201.7-218.3 lbs. (898-972 N)-intake of pressure at the open valve height of 1.1752 inch (29.85mm)

158.5-171.5 lbs. (705-763 N)-exhaust of pressure at the open valve height of 1.239 inch (31.47mm)

The springs should be within plus or minus one pound of each other. Replace the springs as necessary.
