ALIGNMENT

Aiming Precheck

Headlamps should be adjusted with a special alignment tool, state regulations may vary this procedure, use the following procedure for temporary adjustments only.

Perform the following items before attempting to aim the headlamps:

Verify the headlamp dimmer and high beam indicator operation

Inspect and correct all components that could interfere with the proper headlamp alignment

Verify proper tire inflation on all wheels

Clean headlamp lenses and make sure that there are no heavy loads in the trunk or hatch luggage area

The fuel tank should be full. Add 6.5 lbs. (3 kg) of weight over the fuel tank for each estimated gallon of missing fuel.

Alignment Screen Preparation

See Figure 8

Click image to see an enlarged view

Fig. Fig. 8: Headlamp aiming screen, use these lines for the adjustment reference

  1. Position the vehicle on a level surface perpendicular to a flat wall 25 ft. (7.62 m) away from the front of the headlamp lens.
  2.
  3. From the floor up 5 ft. (1.3 m), tape a line on the wall at the centerline of the vehicle. Sight along the centerline of the vehicle (from the rear of the vehicle forward) to verify accuracy of the the line placement.
  4.
  5. Rock the vehicle side to side and up and down (on front bumper assembly) a few times to allow the suspension to stabilize.
  6.

  1. Measure the distance from the center of the headlamp lens to the floor. Transfer measurements to the alignment screen with tape. Use this mark for the up/down adjustment reference.
  2.
  3. Measure distance from the centerline of the vehicle to the center of each headlamp being aligned. Transfer measurements to screen with tape to each side of the vehicle centerline. Use this mark for left/right adjustment reference.
  4.

Headlight Adjustment

Fig. Fig. 10: Headlamp alignment screws-New Yorker and LHS

A properly aimed low beam headlamp will project the top edge of high intensity pattern on the the alignment screen from 2 inches (50mm) above to 2 inches (50mm) below the headlamp centerline. The side-to-side outboard edge of high intensity pattern should be right of the vertical centerline approximately 4 inches (102mm). On the New Yorker models, if the center of the hot spot is 2-6 inches (50-152mm) to the right, the aim is acceptable.

The preferred headlamp alignment is "0'' for the up/down adjustment and "0'' for the left/right adjustment.

The high beam pattern should be correct when the low beams are aligned properly. Check that the center of the low beam hot spot is approximately 8-12 inches (203-305mm) below the high beams, and does not cast the significant bright light above the horizontal centerline. To adjust the headlamp alignment, rotate the alignment screws, to achieve the specified pattern.
