Fig. Fig. 3: Install the O-rings into the rail cavity and place the spacers on the regulator

  1. Relieve the fuel pressure, as described earlier in this section.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. Remove the fuel pressure regulator vacuum connector.
  6.
  7. Remove the regulator clamp screw and clamp.
  8.
  9. Using a flat bladed tool, pry the pressure regulator out of the fuel rail.
  10.
  11. Ensure that the upper O-ring, upper spacer, lower O-ring and lower spacer were removed with the regulator. If not, remove them from the well in the fuel rail.
  12.

To install:
  1. Install the two plastic spacers on the regulator. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the O-rings, then place them in the fuel pressure regulator cavity. Do not install the O-rings on the fuel pressure regulator.
  2.
  3. Install the fuel pressure regulator into the fuel rail cavity.
  4.
  5. Install the fuel pressure regulator hold-down clamp. Tighten the screw to 60 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  6.
  7. Connect the vacuum hose to the fuel pressure regulator.
  8.
  9. Using the DRB III or equivalent scan tool, perform the ASD fuel system test to pressurize the fuel system.
  10.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.
  13. Start the vehicle and check for fuel leaks.
  14.

3.5L Engine

See Figures 4 and 5

The intake manifold plenum must be removed to service the fuel pressure regulator on the 3.5L engine. Refer to Engine & Engine Overhaul for this procedure.

  1. Release the fuel system pressure. Refer to the procedure earlier in this section.
  2.
  3. Label the injector wiring connectors.
  4.
  5. Remove the connectors from the injectors.
  6.
  7. Remove the vacuum tube from the pressure regulator.
  8.
  9. Remove the fuel rail mounting bolts.
  10.
  11. Remove the injector clamp screw.
  12.
  13. Slide the injector clamp toward the rear of the engine, then lift the clamp off of the rail.
  14.
  15. Install the fuel rail mounting bolts finger-tight.
  16.
  17. Using a flat bladed tool, pry the pressure regulator out of the fuel rail.
  18.
  19. Ensure that the upper O-ring, upper spacer, lower O-ring and lower spacer were removed with the regulator. If not, remove them from the well in the fuel rail.
  20.

To install:
  1. Lightly lubricate the O-rings with a couple of drops of engine oil.
  2.
  3. Install the fuel pressure regulator flush with the fuel rail.
  4.
  5. Remove the fuel rail mounting bolts.
  6.
  7. Install the injector clamps.
  8.

Fig. Fig. 4: The fuel pressure regulator is located in the rear of the fuel rail on the right side

  1. Tighten the fuel rail mounting bolts to 100 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
  2.
  3. Install the injector clamp screw.
  4.
  5. Attach the electrical connectors to the injectors.
  6.
  7. Install the intake manifold plenum with a new gasket. Refer to Engine & Engine Overhaul for this procedure.
