Fig. Fig. 8: Loosen the adjustment screw locknut on the sychronization shaft-3.5L engine

  1. Remove the tube connecting the air cleaner to the plenum.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the air plenum from the throttle bodies, PCV make up air tube and the idle air control motor. Remove the plenum from the right side of the vehicle.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the purge hose from the throttle body.
  6.
  7. Remove the throttle body mounting nuts.
  8.
  9. The end throttle shaft has a ball stud that fits into a socket in the synchronization shaft.
  10.
  11. Slide the throttle body back off of the mounting studs. Separate the throttle body from the sychronization shaft, then remove the throttle body.
  12.
  13. Clean the gasket mating surfaces.
  14.
  15. Before installing the left throttle body, remove and clean the right throttle body.
  16.

To install:
  1. Position a new gasket on the throttle body mounting studs.
  2.
  3. Connect the throttle body to the sychronization shaft. Ensure that the ball stud enters the socket in the end of the synchronization shaft. Check that the spring attaches to the shaft and throttle body arm. Also, check that the spring does not bind when opening and closing the throttle blade.
  4.
  5. Place the throttle body on the mounting studs. Tighten the mounting nuts to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
  6.
  7. Connect the purge tube to the nipple on the throttle body.
  8.
  9. Hold the throttle lever in the wide open throttle position. Install the throttle and cruise control cables.
  10.
  11. Check the throttle body sychronization and adjust as needed as follows:
    1. Install a 0.004 inch (0.10mm) feeler gauge between the idle speed screw an the throttle lever on the right throttle body.
    2.
    3. Loosen the adjustment screw locknut on the sychronization shaft.
    4.
    5. Turn the adjustment screw until it just contacts the lever on the sychronization shaft, then tighten the locknut to 36 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
    6.
    7. Check the clearance between the throttle lever and the idle screw. The 0.004 inch (0.10mm) gauge should drag when it is removed. Also a 0.006 inch (0.15mm) feeler gauge should not fit between the lever and the idles speed screw.
    8.

  12.
  13. Install the air plenum.
  14.
  15. Install the air cleaner to air plenum tube.
  16.
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.
  19. Start the engine and check operation.
