Speed Sensors

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

One of the primary inputs to the ABS system is from the wheel speed sensors. There is a sensor at each wheel that reads magnetic impulses from a toothed gear-like tone wheel. The sensors are easily damaged and must be handled with care. Make sure the wheel sensor surfaces are clean since they are magnetic and attract metal chips and debris. Use care when removing, installing and routing the sensor wiring. The wiring must be correctly installed to avoid ABS problems later.

Front Wheel
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Carefully raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove the front wheels.
  4.
  5. Remove the attaching screw that mounts the grommet retaining clip to the inner fender shield.
  6.
  7. Gently remove the speed sensor cable grommet from the fender shield.
  8.
  9. Detach the vehicle wiring harness connector from the speed sensor connector.
  10.
  11. Remove the routing bracket, for the speed sensor cable, from the front strut assembly.
  12.
  13. Remove the screw that mounts the speed sensor head to the steering knuckle.
  14.
  15. Gently remove the speed sensor from the steering knuckle.
  16.

CAUTION
Lightly tap the edge of the sensor ear, rocking the sensor from side to side until it is free.

To install:

Coat the head of the speed sensor with some High Temperature Multi-Purpose E.P. Grease (disc brake-rated wheel bearing grease) before installing into the steering knuckle.

  1. Install the speed sensor head into the steering knuckle. Install the mounting screw and tighten to 60 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  2.
  3. Be sure to check the wheel speed sensor air gap clearance. The allowable clearance range is 0.020-0.065 inch (0.52-1.64mm).
  4.

Correct system operation depends on the wheel speed sensor cables being installed properly. Be sure that the sensor cables are installed in the retainers. Failure to do this could result in cable over extension and/or contact with moving parts. This could result in an open circuit and/or false sensor readings.

  1. Route the sensor cable correctly up to the strut assembly.
  2.
  3. Install the routing bracket for the sensor cable onto the strut assembly. Install and tighten the routing bracket mounting screw.
  4.
  5. Attach the wheel speed sensor connector to the vehicle wiring harness connector. Be sure to securely latch the connector locking tab.
  6.
  7. Push the sensor cable grommet into hole in the inner fender shield. Install the grommet retaining clip and screw.
  8.
  9. Install the front wheels and lug nuts. Tighten the wheel lug nuts in a star pattern sequence and tighten the nuts to half specification. Then repeat the lug nut tightening sequence to 95 ft. lbs. (129 Nm).
  10.
  11. Lower the vehicle. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  12.

Rear Wheel ABS
  1. Disengage the rear seat lower cushion retainer loops from the cups in the floor and lift upward at each end of the rear seat lower cushion. Remove the rear seat lower cushion from the vehicle.
  2.
  3. If equipped with a child safety seat:
    1. Open up child safety seat and remove seat lining.
    2.
    3. Remove mounting bolts securing the seat back frame to trunk closure panel through the access holes in the child seat module.
    4.

  4.
  5. Remove the mounting nuts that secure the rear seat back and seat belts to the floor.
  6.
  7. Lift the rear seat back upward to disengage the hooks at the top of the seat back and remove from vehicle.
  8.
  9. Pull up the edge of the sound insulation on the rear bulkhead. Separate the wheel speed sensor connector from the vehicle wiring harness connector.
  10.
  11. Carefully raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove the rear wheels.
  12.
  13. Remove the sensor cable grommet retaining clip from the rear inner fender. Gently pull the sensor cable and grommet out of the hole in the fender well.
  14.
  15. Remove the speed sensor head mounting bolt from the rear adapter. Remove the wheel speed sensor head from the adapter.
  16.

CAUTION
Lightly tap the edge of the sensor ear, rocking the sensor from side to side until it is free.

  1. Remove fasteners mounting speed sensor cable mounting bracket to inner side of trailing arm.
  2.
  3. Remove the sensor cable routing brackets from the rear fender well and trailing arm bracket at the rear knuckle.
  4.
  5. Remove the wheel speed sensor from the vehicle.
  6.

To install:

Coat the wheel speed sensor, where it slides into the adapter, with High Temperature Multi-Purpose E.P. Grease (disc brake-rated wheel bearing grease) before installing it into the adapter.

  1. Install the wheel speed sensor head into the adapter. Install the attaching screw and tighten to 60 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  2.
  3. Be sure to check the wheel speed sensor air gap clearance. The allowable clearance range is 0.017-0.047 inch (0.45-1.21mm).
  4.
  5. Install the sensor cable mounting bracket onto the trailing arm. Install the sensor cable routing tube-to-trailing arm mounting screws.
  6.
  7. Install the sensor cable routing brackets at the rear fender well and rear knuckle.
  8.
  9. Install the sensor cable and grommet back into the hole in rear inner fender. Install the cable grommet retaining bracket and tighten the attaching screw.
  10.
  11. Install the wheels and lug nuts. Tighten the wheel lug nuts in a star pattern sequence and tighten the nuts to half specification. Then repeat the lug nut tightening sequence to 95 ft. lbs. (129 Nm).
  12.
  13. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
  14.
  15. Attach the speed sensor cable connector to the vehicle wiring harness. Be sure that the connector locking tab is securely latched.
  16.
  17. Install the rear seat back cushion into the vehicle in its proper position.
  18.
  19. Engage the retainer hooks at the top of the rear seat back cushion.
  20.
  21. Install the mounting nuts that secure the rear seat back and seat belts to the floor.
  22.
  23. If equipped with a child safety seat:
    1. Install and tighten mounting bolts to secure seat back frame to trunk closure panel through the access holes in the child seat module.
    2.
    3. Install the child safety seat liner.
    4.

  24.
  25. Install the rear lower seat cushion in proper position into the vehicle.
  26.
  27. Engage the retainer loops into cup on the floor kick-up.
  28.
  29. To engage the retainers, be sure to push downward at each end of the lower seat cushion.
  30.
  31. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  32.
