Proportioning Valve

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION




WARNING
On vehicles equipped with a Bendix Type 6 Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), a Diagnostic Readout Box (DRB or DRB II) is necessary for brake system bleeding. Failure to use a DRB to bleed the system will lead to system failure. Refer to the ABS portion of this section for bleeding procedures and precautions.

Except Premier
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect and plug the brake lines from the proportioning valve.
  4.  
  5. Remove the bolt and nut attaching the valve to the bracket.
  6.  
  7. Remove the valve from the vehicle.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Position the new valve on the mounting bracket. Install the mounting bolt to the valve and tighten securely.
  2.  
  3. Install the brake lines to the new valve and tighten to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Bleed the brake system. For more details, refer to the brake system procedure located later in this section.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the pressure differential switch wiring connector from the switch located on the proportioning valve.
  4.  
  5. Loosen all brake lines connected to the proportioning valve.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the nuts attaching the master cylinder to the vacuum booster.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolt and nut attaching the valve to the bracket.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the brake lines from the valve, then remove the valve.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Connect, but do not tighten, the brake lines to the new proportioning valve.
  2.  
  3. Align the valve with the mounting bracket and install the valve-to-bracket bolt. Tighten the bolt to 61 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Tighten the master cylinder attaching nuts to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Tighten the brake line-to-proportioning valve fittings to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Bleed the brake system. For more details, refer to the brake system bleeding procedure located later in this section.
