If the water shield must be removed to work on the window mechanism or other items mounted inside the door, you will need RTV sealant to retain the water shield to the door metal. Since rain water that gets into the window slit drains down inside the door, it is necessary to seal the water shield carefully so there will not be leakage inside the car.

  1. Unsnap the plastic appliques (decorative covers) from the door pull strap and the remote bezel. Then, pull the front edge of the bezel outward and push the bezel backward to release it.
  2.
  3. Remove the mounting screws at either end of the pull strap and remove it from the door panel.
  4.
  5. Note the installation angle of the window crank handle and then remove it. To do this, use an Allen wrench to remove the Allen screw from the center of the window mechanism shaft.
  6.
  7. Remove the retaining screws from the lower side of the door handle and remove it.
  8.
  9. There are spring clips mounted to the door panel which slip into holes drilled into the door metal. Using a flat stick, gently pry the panel off the door at front, back and bottom to release the clips.
  10.
  11. Lift the panel straight upward to release clips which retain it to the inside of the door by running down into the window slot.
  12.
  13. If the water shield must be removed, carefully pull it off the retaining material.
  14.

To install:
  1. To install the panel, first run new sealer around the door metal under the water shield and then stick the water shield to the door.
  2.
  3. Hook the panel over the door at the window slit and hang it down over the door. Make sure the retaining clips line up with their corresponding holes and then press the panel inward directly over each clip to engage it with the door.
  4.
  5. Install the door handle with the retaining screws if the car has one.
  6.
  7. Install the window crank handle at the same angle by engaging its internal splines with those on the window mechanism shaft. Then, install the retaining screw and tighten it with the Allen wrench.
  8.
  9. Install the pull strap, its retaining screws and the bezels.
  10.
  11. Install the remote bezel.
  12.

Fig. Fig. 20: Mounting fastener locations for the door trim panel

  1. Lower the window all the way. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2.
  3. If the car has manual windows, remove the Allen screw from the end of the window mechanism shaft and remove the crank handle.
  4.
  5. With a piece of thin, relatively soft material (such as a strip of wood), gently pry the electric mirror/door lock bezel out of the armrest. Then, detach the wiring connectors for the electric mirror and the door lock switch.
  6.
  7. Remove the bezel surrounding the remote lock/latch release switches.
  8.
  9. Disconnect the 4 armrest electrical plugs at the armrest. Remove the screw located behind each plug and the single screw in the opening of the switch bezel.
  10.
  11. Rotate the armrest to release and remove it.
  12.
  13. Remove the one remaining trim panel retaining screw from the area of the door near the body pillar.
  14.
  15. There are spring clips mounted in the door panel which slip into holes drilled into the door metal. Using a flat stick, gently pry the panel off the door at the front, back and bottom to release the clips.
  16.
  17. Detach the wire connector at the courtesy lamp.
  18.
  19. Lift the panel straight upward to release the clips which retain it to the inside of the door.
  20.
  21. If the water shield must be removed, carefully pull it off the retaining material.
  22.

To install:
Attach the wire connector at the courtesy lamp.
  4.
  5. Install the trim panel retaining screw located in the area of the door near the body pillar.
  6.
  7. Rotate the armrest into position.
  8.
  9. Install the screw located behind the location of each plug in the armrest and the single screw in the opening of the switch bezel. Connect the 4 armrest electrical plugs.
  10.
  11. Install the bezel surrounding the remote lock/latch release switches.
  12.
  13. Install the wiring connectors for the electric mirror and the door lock switch. Then, install the electric mirror/door lock bezel into the armrest.
  14.
  15. If the car has manual windows, install the crank handle, then install the Allen screw into the end of the window mechanism shaft.
  16.
  17. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  18.

  5. Remove the screw from the opening in which the switch bezel was located.
  6.
  7. Remove the 2 mounting screws from the through-slits in the carpeted area of the map pocket.
  8.
  9. If the car has manually operated windows, remove the retaining Allen screw for the regulator handle from the center of the window regulator shaft. Note the installation angle of the regulator handle and then remove it. Remove the spacer behind the handle.
  10.
  11. Pull the bottom of the trim panel outward carefully to disengage the the lower clips. Pull it out just far enough to gain access to the courtesy lamp connection. Then, reach behind the panel and disconnect the courtesy lamp wire.
  12.
  13. Pull the panel in order to remove the remaining clips from the door. Lift the panel straight upward to release clips which retain it to the inside of the door.
  14.
  15. If the water shield must be removed, carefully pull it off the retaining material.
  16.

To install:
  1. To install the panel, first run new sealer around the door metal under the water shield and then stick the water shield to the door.
  2.
  3. Hook the panel over the door at the window slit and hang it down over the door. Attach the wire connector at the courtesy lamp. Make sure the retaining clips line up with their corresponding holes and then press the panel inward directly over each clip to engage it with the door.
  4.
  5. Reinstall the regulator handle at its original installation angle.
  6.
  7. Install the 2 screws attaching the door panel, working through the slits in the carpeted area of the map pocket.
