For the inspection procedure for the rear brake shoes, refer to the inspection procedure of the rear brake drum portion of this section.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
- Remove the brake drum. See the procedure earlier in this section.
- Unhook the parking brake cable from the secondary (trailing) shoe.
- Remove the shoe-to-anchor springs (retracting springs). They can be gripped and unhooked with a pair of pliers.
- Remove the shoe hold down springs: compress them slightly and slide them off of the hold down pins.
- Remove the adjuster screw assembly by spreading the shoes apart. The adjuster nut must be fully backed off.
- Raise the parking brake lever. Pull the secondary (trailing) shoe away from the backing plate so pull-back spring tension is released.
- Remove the secondary (trailing) shoe and disengage the spring end from the backing plate.
- Raise the primary (leading) shoe to release spring tension. Remove the shoe and disengage the spring end from the backing plate.
- Inspect the brakes (see procedures under Brake Drum Inspection).
- Lubricate the six shoe contact areas on the brake backing plate and the web end of the brake shoe which contacts the anchor plate. Use a multi-purpose lubricant or a high temperature brake grease made for this purpose.
- Chrysler recommends that the rear wheel bearings be cleaned and repacked whenever the brakes are renewed. Be sure to install a new bearing seal. Refer to the illustration in this section.
- With the leading shoe return spring in position on the shoe, install the shoe at the same time as you engage the return spring in the end support.
- Position the end of the shoe under the anchor.
- With the trailing shoe return spring in position, install the shoe at the same time as you engage the spring in the support (backing plate).
- Position the end of the shoe under the anchor.
- Spread the shoes and install the adjuster screw assembly making sure that the forked end that enters the shoe is curved down.
- Insert the shoe hold down spring pins and install the hold down springs.
- Install the shoe-to-anchor springs.
- Install the parking brake cable onto the parking brake lever.
- Replace the brake drum and tighten the nut to 20-25 ft. lbs. (27-34 Nm) while rotating the wheel.
- Back off the nut enough to release the bearing preload and position the locknut with one pair of slots aligned with the cotter pin hole. Refer to service procedures in this section.
- Install the cotter pin. The end-play should be 0.001-0.003 in. (0.025-0.076mm).
- Install the grease cap.

If you are not thoroughly familiar with the procedures involved in brake replacement, disassemble and assemble one side at a time, leaving the other wheel intact, as a reference. This will reduce the risk of assembling the brakes incorrectly. Special brake tools are available to make this repair easier.
- Remove the brake drum as described above. Remove the automatic adjuster spring by disconnecting the upper hook with a pair of pliers and then disconnecting it at the bottom. Then, remove the automatic adjuster lever.
- Rotate the adjuster screw assembly to move each shoe out far enough to be free of the wheel cylinder boots.
- Disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake actuating lever located at the brake mounting plate.
- Remove the two shoe hold-down springs (use special brake tool if possible) by depressing and then turning each mounting washer so the narrow cut in the center of the clip is lined up with the locking bar. When the washer is properly lined up, slowly remove the tension and then remove the washer and spring.
- Rock the shoes away from the wheel cylinder at the top and then loosen the adjustment on the automatic adjuster until tension is removed from the brake return spring (linking the tops of the shoes). Then, unhook and remove this spring. Unhook the shoe-to-shoe spring from the bottoms of the shoes, too.
- Pull the shoes down and away from the support plate and remove them. In the case of the trailing shoe, use a suitable small lever to pull the C-clip off the retaining post. Remove the C-clip and the wave washer underneath, and then disconnect the parking brake lever at the shoe.
- Clean the metal parts of the brake shoes and inspect them to ensure that they are not bent or severely worn. Inspect the lining to make sure it contacts the drum evenly. Also inspect it to make sure that the minimum lining thickness requirement shown in the Brake Specifications chart and any applicable state inspection standards for lining thickness are met. Always use these specifications as a guide. Replace the brake shoes before damage to the brake drum starts.
- Clean and inspect the brake support plate and the self-adjuster threads. Apply Multipurpose grease to the threads. Replace the self-adjuster if the threads are corroded. Inspect the springs for overheating (signs are burned paint or distorted end coils) and replace as necessary.
- Lubricate all 8 contact areas of the support plate with Multipurpose grease. Insert the post of the parking brake lever through the trailing shoe. Install the wave washer and a new C-clip.
- Attach the return (upper) spring between the two shoe assemblies; then install the brake automatic adjuster with the two stepped sides of the forks facing to the front or outboard sides of the shoes. The longer fork must face toward the rear.
- Connect the shoe-to-shoe spring to the bottoms of the shoes. Then, expand the automatic adjuster assembly by turning the screw until the shoes are far enough apart that they will not disturb the wheel cylinder boots when installing them. Move the shoes upward and into position on the support plate, sliding the bottoms under the retaining clip at the bottom of the plate.
- Install the hold-down springs by forcing the locks over the retainers and then turning them 90° to ensure they lock positively.
- Install the automatic adjuster lever and its retaining spring. Connect the parking brake cable to the parking brake actuating lever on the mounting plate.
- Adjust the automatic adjuster well inward so the brake drum can be installed without resistance.
Make sure the adjuster nut stays in contact with the tubular strut of the adjuster when you do this.
- Install the brake drum. Readjust the wheel bearings as described in Suspension & Steering and install a new cotter pin. Install the wheel and torque the bolts.
- After lowering the car, pump the brake pedal several times to adjust the brakes. When there is adequate pedal, road test the car in an isolated area at lower speeds applying the brakes repeatedly to ensure that they are performing well and to complete the adjustment. Refer to the necessary service procedures in this information.
