REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

The evaporator core can be removed only after the entire heater/air conditioning unit is removed from the vehicle. Refer to the removal and installation procedures for the heater-A/C unit.

The heater/air conditioning this unit is equipped with a drain tube located on right side of dash panel if the tube becomes obstructed, water will enter passenger compartment floor.

Except Premier and Monaco
  1. Place the heater-A/C unit on a suitable work surface.
  2.
  3. Locate and remove one retaining nut from the blend-air door pivot shaft.
  4.

  9. Remove the 3 heater-A/C unit cover attaching screws, fastened upward at the defroster outlet chamber.
  10.
  11. Remove the 2 heater-A/C unit cover attaching screws, fastened upward at the air inlet plenum.
  12.
  13. Remove the 11 heater-A/C unit cover attaching screws, fastened downward into the housing. Then, lift the cover from the heater-A/C unit.
  14.
  15. Remove the expansion valve plate seal and retaining screw from under the valve plate.
  16.
  17. Lift the evaporator coil from the heater-A/C unit.
  18.

To install:

To install:

WARNING
Failure to maintain the correct oil level in the system will cause compressor failure. Too much oil in the system will decrease system efficiency and possibly cause system noise.

  1. Add 3 fl. oz. (89 ml) of clean refrigerant oil to the accumulator/drier inlet tube whenever the evaporator core is replaced with a new one. This will compensate for the refrigerant oil lost in the replaced evaporator core.
  2.
  3. Position the evaporator core in the lower housing.
  4.
  5. Position the upper housing on the lower housing. Ensure that the upper half is seated in the groove on the blower motor trim ring. If the trim ring is not seated properly, a tapping noise may occur when the housing is installed in the vehicle.
  6.
  7. With the halves mated, reach inside the housing and position the blend door pivot shaft into the opening.
  8.
  9. Install the clips around the middle joint of the housing halves.
  10.
  11. Install the screws that hold the upper and lower halves together.
  12.
  13. Install the blower motor with the retaining screws.
  14.
  15. Connect the wires to the blower motor and secure them in place with the retaining clip.
  16.
  17. Install the foam gaskets.
  18.
  19. Carefully insert the heater core into the housing and push down until it snaps in place.
  20.
  21. Slide the hose into the housing, then press down to lock it in place.
  22.
  23. Slide the vacuum motor arm onto the recirculation door pivot shaft. Press it in until the tab locks in place.
  24.
  25. Connect the spring to the vacuum motor arm and to the housing.
  26.
  27. Install the ACM with its mounting screws.
  28.
  29. Install the vacuum and electrical connectors to the ACM.
  30.
  31. Install the heater-A/C assembly unit into the vehicle as described earlier in this section.
