    BANDS

Only the A-670 transaxle has easily adjustable bands.

    A-670 Transaxle
    KICKDOWN BAND (FRONT)

The kickdown band adjusting screw is located on the left side (top front) of the transaxle case.

    1. Loosen the locknut and back the nut off approximately five complete revolutions. Test the adjusting screw for free turning in the transaxle case.
    2.
    3. Using a special wrench (Tool C-3880-A with the adapter Tool C-3705, or equivalent), tighten the band adjusting screw to 47-50 inch lbs. (5 Nm). If the adapter C-3705 is not used, tighten the adjusting screw to 72 inch lbs. (8 Nm) which is the true torque amount.
    4.
    5. Back the adjusting screw off 2 1 / 2 revolutions.
    6.
    7. Tighten the locknut to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm).
    8.
    9. The band should now be completely adjusted.
    10.

    LOW/REVERSE BAND (FRONT)
    1. Loosen the locknut and back the nut off approximately five complete revolutions. Test the adjusting screw for free turning in the transaxle case.
    2.
    3. Tighten the adjusting screw to 41 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
    4.
    5. Back the adjusting screw off 3 1 / 2 revolutions.
    6.
    7. Tighten the locknut to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm).
    8.
    9. The band should now be completely adjusted.
    10.

    SHIFT LINKAGE ADJUSTMENT

    Except Premier and Monaco
    1. Put the gearshift in Park. Loosen the clamp bolt located on the gearshift cable bracket.
    2.
    3. On column shifts, make sure that the preload adjustment spring engages the fork on the transaxle bracket.
    4.
    5. Pull the shift lever by hand (on the transaxle) all the way to the front detent position (which puts the transaxle in Park. Then, tighten the lockbolt to 100 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
    6.
    7. Check the adjustment as follows:
      1. The detent positions of the transaxle shift lever for Neutral and Drive should be within the limits of the corresponding gate stops on the hand shift lever.
      2.
      3. The starter must operate with the key only if the shift lever is in the Park or Neutral position.
      4.

    8.

    Premier and Monaco

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.
    3. Shift into the P detent.
    4.
    5. Remove the shifter cover and locate the shift cable cross-lock where the cable meets the shifter bracket. Release the shift cable cross-lock by pulling it upward.
    6.
    7. Move the transaxle shift lever all the way rearward into the P detent. Be sure the lever is centered in the detent. Verify positive engagement of the park lock by attempting to rotate the halfshafts. The shafts cannot be turned if the park lock is properly engaged.
    8.
    9. On 3.0L engine, adjust by performing the following:
      1. Verify that the cable is properly routed and secured and the cable grommet is fully seated in the floor pan. Press the cable cross-lock downward until it snaps in place.
      2.
      3. Position the cable self-adjusting unit in the fork of the lower cable mounting bracket at the transaxle. Use the index key to properly index and seat the cable within the bracket.
      4.
      5. Seat the cable core end fitting onto the transaxle operating lever pin.
      6.
      7. At the transaxle end fitting, push the core-adjust slider mechanism until it snaps into a locked position. This will properly adjust and lock the gearshift cable.
      8.

    10.
    11. Check the shift cable adjustment. The engine should start in P and N only.
    12.

    THROTTLE PRESSURE ROD

    Except Premier and Monaco
    1. Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature.
    2.
    3. Loosen the adjustment swivel lock screw.
    4.
    5. To ensure proper adjustment, the swivel must be free to slide along the flat end of the throttle rod. Disassembly, clean and lubricate the components so that they slide freely, as required.
    6.
    7. Hold the transaxle throttle control lever firmly toward the engine (against its internal stop), then tighten the swivel lockscrew to 100 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
    8.
    9. The adjustment is finished and the linkage backlash was automatically removed by the preload spring.
    10.
    11. Road test the vehicle and check the shift points.
    12.

    THROTTLE VALVE CABLE

    Premier and Monaco

    See Figures 1, 2 and 3

    1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
    2.
    3. Loosen the cable locknuts and lift the threaded shank of the cable out of the engine bracket.
    4.
    5. Place the throttle lever in the curb idle position.
    6.
    7. An accurate measurement must now be made. Vernier calipers are suggested. If accurate calipers are not available, fabricate a cable adjustment gauge from a small piece of sheet stock or other material that can be slipped over the throttle cable wire. The gauge must be 1.55 in. (39.5mm) long.

Fig. Fig. 3: Hold the cable shank in the detent position while tightening the cable locknuts

    1. Pull the cable wire forward and position the vernier calipers or fabricated gauge on the wire between the cable connector and cable end.
    2.
    3. Pull the cable shank rearward to the detent position but not to the wide open throttle position; the detent position feels similar to a stop when reached.
    4.
    5. Hold the cable shank at the detent position, then insert the cable shank into the cable bracket and tighten the cable locknuts.
    6.
    7. Remove the vernier calipers or gauge and verify the adjustment. The cable detent position should be reached when the cable wire travels 1.51-1.59 in. (38.5-40.5mm).
