TESTING

Except Premier and Monaco
  1. Make sure the transaxle shift cable is properly adjusted.
  2.
  3. Pull the wiring connector off the switch. Put the transaxle in PARK.
  4.
  5. With a battery powered continuity tester, test for continuity between the center pin of the switch and the transaxle case. Repeat the test with the transaxle in NEUTRAL.
  6.
  7. Test to make sure there is no continuity in all other gear lever positions.
  8.
  9. Now, shift the tester to the two outside terminals of the switch. Have someone shift the gear lever to all positions and make sure there is continuity only in the REVERSE position. Repeat this test with the tester hooked up between either pin and the case. There should be no continuity between either outside terminal and the case in any gear lever position.
  10.
  11. Place a container underneath to catch draining fluid. Then, unscrew the switch and remove it from the transaxle case. Have someone move the gearshift to PARK and NEUTRAL positions while watching to see that the switch operating fingers inside the case are centered in the opening in which the switch is mounted.
  12.
  13. Replace the switch if it fails any of the tests and if the shift cable and actuating fingers are okay. Make sure to reinstall the switch with a new seal, tighten it to 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm) and replace lost fluid.
  14.

ADJUSTMENT

Except Premier and Monaco

The neutral safety switch is the center terminal of the three terminal switch, located on the transaxle. The back-up light switch uses the two outside terminals. The center terminal provides a ground for the starter solenoid circuit through the selector lever in the Park and Neutral positions only.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2.
  3. Unscrew the switch from the transaxle, and allow the fluid to drain into a pan.
  4.
  5. Move the selector lever to see that the switch operating lever fingers are centered in the switch opening.
  6.
  7. Install the new switch and new seal. Tighten the switch assembly to 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm). Check for proper operation.
  8.
