The charging system on all models works basically in the same fashion. The charging system contains a battery, an alternator and a regulator.
The alternator has sealed bearings with lifetime lubrication in both end frames. A conventional fan mounted next to the pulley, pulls air through the assembly for cooling. An internal fan, mounted on the rotor, pulls air through the slip ring end frame to cool the rectifier bridge and, on Premier and Monaco, the regulator. The air is expelled through openings in the end frame. Periodic maintenance on the alternator is not required.
The alternator supplies Direct Current (DC) voltage to recharge the battery and operate the vehicle's electrical system. A built-in solid-state voltage regulator (on Premier and Monaco) controls the output of the alternator. On all models except for the Premier and Monaco, the voltage regulator is located in the PCM or SBEC, and performs the same function.
When operating normally, the charge indicator lamp will come on when the ignition switch is turned to RUN or START , and will then go out when the engine starts. With the engine running the charge indicator lamp should come on only when there is a problem in the charging system.
