Chrysler Front Wheel Drive Cars 6-CYL 1988-1995 Repair Information

Manifold Air Temperature (MAT) Sensor/Charge Temperature Sensor

Print

OPERATION

See Figures 1 and 2

The MAT sensor is only found on 1988-90 and early 1991 Premier and Monaco vehicles, whereas the charge temperature sensor is equipped on late 1991 and all 1992 Premier and Monaco and 1988-90 except Premier and Monaco vehicles. The two sensors perform the same function.

Both the Manifold Air Temperature (MAT) sensor and the charge temperature sensor are installed in the throttle body adapter at the rear of the intake manifold. The sensor element extends into the air stream. The sensors provide an input voltage to the ECU. As the temperature of the air stream in the manifold varies, the sensors' resistance changes resulting in a different input voltage to the ECU/PCM.

TESTING

See Figures 3 and 4

  1. Unplug the electrical connector from the MAT/charge temperature sensor.
  2.
  3. Connect an ohmmeter between the terminals of the sensor. The sensor resistance should be as follows:

Except Premier and Monaco-with the engine cold, approximately 70°F (22°C), sensor resistance should be between 7,000-13,000 ohms

Except Premier and Monaco-with the engine at normal operating temperature, approximately 200°F (93°C), sensor resistance should be between 700-1000 ohms

Premier and Monaco-refer to the coolant sensor and MAT sensor resistance chart/illustration for the proper approximate values

  4.
  5. If the resistance readings are not within specifications, replace the sensor with a new one, then retest the sensor.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figures 1 and 2

The MAT sensor is located in the throttle body adapter below the throttle body and behind the fitting for the brake vacuum booster.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.
  4.
  5. Unscrew the sensor from the adapter.
  6.

To install:
  1. Install the sensor in the throttle body adapter.
  2.
  3. Tighten the MAT sensor to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm) and the charge Temperature sensor to 50 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  4.
  5. Plug the electrical connector back into the MAT sensor.
  6.
  7. Connect the battery cable.
  8.
