Rocker Arm (Valve) Cover

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



3.0L Engines
EXCEPT PREMIER AND MONACO

See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly, then label, disconnect and move the spark plug wires aside.
  4.  
  5. Remove all vacuum connections as necessary.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rocker arm cover bolts, then remove the cover from the cylinder head.
  8.

To install:
  1. Clean cylinder head and cover mating surfaces of all stuck on gasket material and oil.
  2.  
  3. Apply a 1 / 16 in. (1.6mm) thick and 3 / 8 in. (9.5mm) long bead of sealant to the four corners of the rocker arm cover in the camshaft hole (see the illustration). Install the new gasket to the rocker arm cover.
  4.  
  5. Install the rocker arm cover to the cylinder head. Make certain that the gasket is sitting correctly under the rocker arm cover before tightening the mounting bolts. Tighten the rocker arm cover bolts to 7.5 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).

PREMIER AND MONACO

See Figures 2 and 3

On some models, the right and left-hand cylinder rocker (valve) cover gaskets may not be interchangeable-match up the old gaskets before installation.

RIGHT BANK
  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the accessory drive belt. Refer to General Information & Maintenance for this procedure.
  4.  
  5. Remove the spark plug cable holder.
  6.  
  7. Remove the air conditioning compressor mounting bolts. Carefully position the A/C compressor in the right side fender well and secure in place with strong wire or cord.
  8.  
  9. Loosen the rocker arm cover mounting bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rocker arm cover from the cylinder head.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Clean the cylinder head and rocker arm cover mating surfaces of all dirt, oil and old gasket material.
  2.  
  3. Apply a light coating of Mopar® Gasket-in-a-Tube Sealer, or the equivalent, to the top of the timing case cover-to-cylinder head joint areas.
  4.  
  5. Install the rocker arm cover with a new gasket to the cylinder head.
  6.  
  7. Install the spark plug cable holder.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the rocker arm cover bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the A/C compressor. Tighten the mounting bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to General Information & Maintenance for this procedure.

LEFT BANK
  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the throttle body air inlet hose assembly from the throttle body and air cleaner.
  4.  
  5. Remove the vacuum brake booster hose from the throttle body.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the Crankcase Ventilation (CCV) fresh air hose at the rocker arm cover.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the CCV vacuum hose at the rocker arm cover.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the air cleaner and remove it.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the accelerator cable at the throttle body and hold-down bracket. Lay it off to the side.
  14.  


WARNING
When disconnecting the cruise control cable at the throttle body, do not use pliers to remove the connector. Use finger pressure only. Pliers can break the connector.

  1. Remove the idle speed regulator bracket mounting bolts at the rear of the rocker arm cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the spark plug cable holder.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the rocker arm cover mounting bolts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rocker arm cover and old gasket from the cylinder head.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Clean the cylinder head and rocker arm cover mating surfaces of dirt, oil and old gasket material.
  2.  
  3. Apply a light coating of Mopar® Gasket-in-a-Tube sealer, or the equivalent, to the top of the timing case cover-to-cylinder head joint areas.
  4.  
  5. Install the rocker arm cover and a new gasket.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the rocker arm cover mounting bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the spark plug cable holder.
  10.  
  11. Install the idle speed regulator bracket to the rear of the rocker arm cover.
  12.  
  13. Connect the accelerator cable and cruise control cable to the hold-down bracket and throttle body.
  14.  
  15. Install the power steering pump reservoir.
  16.  
  17. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  18.  
  19. Install the CCV fresh air hose and vacuum hose.
  20.  
  21. Connect the vacuum brake booster hose.
  22.  
  23. Connect the throttle body air inlet hose assembly to the air cleaner and throttle body.
  24.  
  25. Connect the battery negative (-) cable.
  26.  

3.3L and 3.8L Engines

On some models, the right and left-hand rocker arm (valve) cover gaskets may not be interchangeable-match up the old gaskets before installation.

  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper intake manifold assembly. Refer to the intake manifold procedures appearing later in this section.
  4.  
  5. Label each spark plug cable before it is removed. Disconnect the spark plug wires by pulling straight out on the boot.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the closed ventilation system and evaporation control system from the cylinder head cover.
  8.  
  9. Loosen and remove the rocker arm cover mounting bolts. Remove the rocker arm cover from the cylinder head.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Clean the cylinder head cover gasket surface of dirt, oil and old gasket material. Inspect the cover for distortion and straighten the cover if needed.
  2.  
  3. Clean the head rail, if necessary. Install a new gasket and tighten the rocker arm cover fasteners to 8.9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the closed crankcase ventilation system and evaporation control system.
  6.  
  7. Install the spark plug wires. Make certain that the correct cables are connected to its respective spark plugs.
  8.  
  9. Install the upper intake manifold assembly. Refer to the intake manifold procedures appearing later in this section.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative (-) battery cable.
  12.
