Use only brake fluid conforming to Federal DOT 3 specifications.
See Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4
Once every 7500 miles (12,000 km) or 6 months, check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder. The master cylinder is mounted either on the firewall or the brake booster, and is divided into two reservoirs. The fluid must be maintained at the bottom of the split ring.
On vehicles with anti-lock brake system, depressurize the system BEFORE, inspecting the fluid level. Turn OFF the ignition and remove the key. Pump the brake pedal at least 50 times to relieve the pressure in the brake system.
Remove the two master cylinder caps and fill to the bottom of the split rings using DOT 3 brake fluid. If the brake fluid level is chronically low there may be a leak in the system which should be investigated immediately.
Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air, which reduces its effectiveness and causes corrosion. Never leave the brake fluid container or master cylinder uncovered any longer than necessary. Brake fluid also damages paint. If any is spilled, it should be washed off immediately with clear, cold water.
