Headlight Switch

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1988 Models Except Premier
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the cluster bezel as necessary. Remove the three screws securing the headlamp switch mounting plate to the base panel.
  4.  
  5. Pull the switch and plate rearward and unplug the wiring connector.
  6.  
  7. Depress the button on the switch and remove the knob and stem.
  8.  
  9. Snap out the escutcheon, then remove the nut that attaches the switch to the mounting plate.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Install the mounting nut to secure the switch to the mounting plate.
  2.  
  3. Snap the escutcheon back in.
  4.  
  5. Push the knob and stem back into the switch.
  6.  
  7. Connect the electrical wiring to the switch.
  8.  
  9. Install the 3 screws securing the headlamp switch mounting plate to the base panel.
  10.  
  11. Install the cluster bezel, if removed.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  

1989-95 Models Except Premier and Monaco
DAYTONA AND LEBARON COUPE/CONVERTIBLE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the panel vent grille above the switch pod assembly and remove the 2 revealed pod mounting screws.
  4.  
  5. Remove the 2 remaining screws under the pod and pull the pod out to disconnect the wiring harnesses. Remove the pod from the instrument panel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the turn signal switch lever by pulling it straight out of the pod.
  8.  
  9. Remove the inner panel from the pod. Remove the turn signal switch in order to gain access to the headlight switch.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the switch linkage from the buttons.
  12.  
  13. Remove the switch mounting screws and remove the entire switch assembly.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Install the switch and secure with the retaining screws.
  2.  
  3. Connect the switch linkage to the buttons.
  4.  
  5. Install the turn signal switch. Install the inner panel to the pod.
  6.  
  7. Insert the turn signal lever back into the turn signal switch.
  8.  
  9. Attach the electrical wiring to the switch pod. Install the pod and secure it in place with the mounting screws.
  10.  
  11. Install the panel vent grille above the switch pod assembly after installing the upper retaining screws.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable and check the system for proper operation.
  14.  

ALL OTHER MODELS
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the headlight switch bezel or cluster bezel, as required.
  4.  
  5. Remove the screws securing the headlight switch mounting plate to the instrument panel. Pull the assembly out and disconnect the connectors from the switch.
  6.  
  7. Depress the spring button and remove the headlight switch knob and stem.
  8.  
  9. Remove the escutcheon, if equipped, and remove the nut that attaches the switch to the mounting plate.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Install the mounting nut to secure the switch to the mounting plate.
  2.  
  3. Snap the escutcheon back in.
  4.  
  5. Push the knob and stem back into the switch.
  6.  
  7. Connect the electrical wiring to the switch.
  8.  
  9. Install the 3 screws securing the headlamp switch mounting plate to the base panel.
  10.  
  11. Install the cluster bezel, if removed.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable and check the switch for proper operation.
  14.  

Premier and Monaco

The windshield wiper, turn signal, headlight and dimmer switches are all combined in the Combination Switch on the left side of the steering column.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. If not equipped with passive restraint, remove the lower instrument panel cover. If equipped with passive restraint, perform the following:
    1. Pull the ashtray from the receptacle, remove the receptacle and unplug the lighter.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 2 screws fastening the console to the front bracket.
    4.  
    5. Remove the armrest and the 2 screws fastening the console to the rear bracket.
    6.  
    7. Reach inside the console and push out the seat belt guides. Remove the console.
    8.  
    9. Remove the bolts fastening the pivot bracket to the knee bolster. Loosen, but do not remove, the 2 bolts fastening the pivot bracket to the front console bracket.
    10.  
    11. Remove the screw and the 2 Torx® screws that attach the bracket to the floor and slide the bracket back.
    12.  
    13. Remove the screw located at the top of the knee bolster to the left of the steering column.
    14.  
    15. Remove the screw attaching the air duct to the knee bolster.
    16.  
    17. Remove the screw located at the bottom of the instrument panel holding the garnish penal.
    18.  
    19. Remove both bolster end caps and the revealed nuts.
    20.  
    21. Move the knee bolster toward the rear of the vehicle enough to gain access to the 2 screws holding the parking brake handle, then lower the handle.
    22.  
    23. Remove the knee bolster.
    24.

  5. Remove the screws, remove the support rod and pull the air duct aside.
  6.  
  7. Cut the plastic tie-wrap straps.
  8.  
  9. Loosen the hold-down nut in the center of the steering column electrical connector and separate the connector.
  10.  
  11. Separate the left side pod switch connector from the steering column connector by placing a flat blade tool between the connectors to disengage the locking tab. Push on the wire side of the left side pod switch connector and slide the connector out of the channels of the steering column connector.
  12.  
  13. Unfasten the electrical connector, then remove the bottom 2 screws (not the rivets) from the pod assembly.
  14.  
  15. To gain access to the inside of the pod, remove the screws from the back of the left side switch pod assembly and remove the switch pod housing back cover.
  16.  

There are small retaining clips on the left side pod that may fall off when the switch is removed.

  1. Carefully pull the switch pod far enough from the housing to expose the 2 screws, remove them and gently pull the switch forward and pull the harness out through the housing to remove the switch.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Route the switch assembly connector through the housing and along the underside of the steering column.
  2.  
  3. Attach the switch connector.
  4.  
  5. Connect the steering column connector and install the hold-down nut. Secure with a new tie.
  6.  
  7. Position the switch and secure with the screws.
  8.  
  9. Connect the air duct.
  10.  
  11. Install the lower support bar.
  12.  
  13. Install the knee bolster and console by reversing their removal procedure, if equipped, or install the lower instrument cover.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable and check all functions of the combination switch for proper operation.
