REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

It is difficult to salvage (to keep it from breaking or to reuse it) a windshield during the removal operation. The windshield is part of the structural support for the roof. The urethane bonding used to secure the windshield to the fence is difficult to cut or clean from any surface. If the mouldings are set in urethane, it would also be unlikely they can be salvaged. Before starting this procedure, check on the availability of the windshield and moldings from a parts supplier.
- Remove the inside rear view mirror-refer to the necessary service procedures later in this section.
- Remove the windshield wiper arms and cowl cover.
- Remove the windshield moldings using a trim stick.
- Cut the urethane bonding from around windshield using a sharp, cold knife.
- Remove the windshield from the vehicle.
Open the left front door window before installing the windshield to avoid pressurizing the passenger compartment; if a door or the trunk lid is slammed shut before the urethane bonding has had the chance to cure completely, leaks around the windshield may result.
Allow the urethane sealer at least 24 hours to cure before returning the vehicle to use. The windshield fence should be cleaned of old bonding material. Support spacers should be also be cleaned and properly installed on the weld studs or repair screws at the bottom of the windshield opening.
- Place the replacement windshield into the windshield opening with the glass in the center of the opening against the support spacers.
- Mark the glass at the support spacers with a grease pencil, or pieces of masking tape and a pen, to use as a reference for installation. Remove the replacement windshield from the windshield opening.
- Position the windshield inside on a suitable work surface with two padded 4x4x20 in. (10x10x50cm) blocks of wood. The blocks of wood should be positioned approximately 2.5 ft. (76cm) apart.
- Clean the inside of the windshield with Mopar® Glass Cleaner, or equivalent, and a lint-free cloth.
- Apply clear glass primer in a 1 in. (25mm) wide strip around the perimeter of the the windshield and wipe clean.
- Install the moldings onto the windshield.
- Apply black-out primer 0.75 in. (19mm) wide on the top and sides of the windshield and 1 in. (25mm) on bottom of the windshield. Allow at least 3 minutes drying time.
- Position windshield bonding compression spacers on lower fence above the support spacers at the edge of the windshield opening.
- Apply a 0.04 in. (1mm) bead of urethane around perimeter of windshield along the inside of the mouldings.
- With the ais of an assistant, position the windshield over the windshield opening. Align the reference marks at the bottom of the windshield to the support spacers.
- Slowly lower the windshield glass to the windshield opening fence. Guide the top moulding into proper position as necessary.
- Push windshield inward to fence spacers at bottom and until the top molding is flush to the roof line.
- Clean excess urethane from the exterior. Install cowl cover and wipers.
- Install inside rear view mirror.
- After repair has cured, water test windshield.
