Fuel Pressure Regulator

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



3.0L Engines
EXCEPT PREMIER AND MONACO
  1. Relieve the fuel pressure, as described earlier in this section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the fuel return hose clamp and remove the fuel return hose from the nipple.
  6.  
  7. Remove the vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator.
  8.  
  9. Remove the screw holding the fuel return tube to the intake manifold.
  10.  
  11. Remove the fuel pressure regulator screws. Remove the fuel pressure regulator from the engine.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Lubricate the O-ring on the fuel pressure regulator with clean SAE 30 weight engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install the fuel pressure regulator into the fuel rail. Tighten the screws to 90 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the screw holding the fuel return tube clamp in place. Tighten the screw also to 90 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the vacuum hose to the fuel pressure regulator.
  8.  
  9. Connect the fuel return hose to the fuel return tube. Tighten the screw to 10 inch lbs. (1 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. Start the vehicle and check for fuel leaks.
  14.  

When starting the engine, allow extra time for the system to pressurize itself.

PREMIER AND MONACO
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Relieve fuel system pressure by referring to the procedures found earlier in this section.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the fuel return tube from the fuel pressure regulator using the quick-disconnect tool 6182, or equivalent. Slide the tool over the nipple and push the tool into the connector until it stops on the casing. Slowly pull the connector away.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the pressure regulator.
  8.  
  9. Unscrew the line nut from the fitting at the side of the fuel pressure regulator.
  10.  
  11. Remove the nipple fitting at the return side of the regulator.
  12.  
  13. Remove the locknut and washer, then remove the regulator.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Install the fuel pressure regulator, washer and locknut. Tighten the locknut until snug.
  2.  
  3. Install the nipple fitting on the pressure regulator by referring to the procedures for quick-connect fittings, found earlier in this section.
  4.  
  5. Connect the fuel return line to the fuel pressure regulator. Push the connector over the nipple until a click is heard. Pull back on the connector to verify that the connector is locked in place.
  6.  
  7. Connect the fuel hose at the side of the pressure regulator.
  8.  
  9. Connect the vacuum hose to the rear of the regulator.
  10.  
  11. Turn the key to the ON position and check for leaks.
  12.  

3.3L and 3.8L Engines
  1. Relieve the fuel pressure, as described earlier in this section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the fuel pressure regulator vacuum connector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the regulator retainer screw.
  8.  
  9. Remove the fuel pressure regulator retainer.
  10.  
  11. Remove the fuel pressure regulator and O-rings.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Ensure that the fuel pressure regulator has two plastic spacers. Place the O-rings in the fuel pressure regulator cavity. Do not install the O-rings on the fuel pressure regulator.
  2.  
  3. Install the fuel pressure regulator into the fuel rail.
  4.  
  5. Install the fuel pressure regulator retainer.
  6.  
  7. Install the retainer screw. Tighten the screw to 60 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the vacuum hose to the fuel pressure regulator.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  
  13. Start the vehicle and check for fuel leaks.
  14.  

When starting the engine, allow extra time for the system to pressurize itself.
