REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1988-89 Models
WITH STANDARD COLUMN

CAUTION
On vehicles equipped with an air bag, the negative battery cable must be disconnected, isolated and a period of at least 2 minutes allowed to pass before working on the system. Failure to do so may result in deployment of the air bag and possible personal injury. Read all air bag precautions in Chassis Electrical before servicing this component.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower steering column cover, if equipped.
  4.  
  5. Straighten the steering wheel so the tires are pointing straight-ahead.
  6.  

If equipped with an air bag, it is imperative that the steering wheel removal and installation procedure in this section be followed.

  1. Remove the steering wheel. For more details, refer to the steering wheel removal procedure located earlier in this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the plastic wiring channel from the under the steering column and unplug the turn signal switch connector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the hazard switch knob. Remove the slotted hex-head screw that attaches the wiper switch to the turn signal switch.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 3 mounting screws and pull the turn signal switch out of the column.
  8.

To install:
  1. Lubricate the turn signal switch pivot (entire 360° around the depth of the column hole through which it must be installed.) Use a film of Lubriplate® or the equivalent.
  2.  
  3. Run the wiring through the opening and down the steering column.
  4.  
  5. Position the switch on the upper bearing housing. Install the 3 mounting screws and tighten until snug. Position the turn signal lever (control stalk) to the turn signal switch pivot, then install the screw through the pivot and tighten securely. Be sure that the dimmer switch rod is in the control stalk pocket.
  6.  
  7. Install the upper bearing spring, cancelling cam and lock plate. Using tool C-4156, or equivalent, compress the lock plate and install a new retaining ring. Install the hazard warning knob with the screw.
  8.  
  9. Connect the turn signal wires and install the wiring channel.
  10.  
  11. Install the steering wheel and tighten the retaining nut to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the horn pad.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable and check the turn signal switch and dimmer switch for proper operation.
  16.  
  17. Install the lower column cover, if equipped.
  18.  

WITH TILT COLUMN

CAUTION

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower steering column cover, if equipped, then remove the plastic wiring channel from under the steering column. If the wiring channel retainers were damaged during removal, new ones will be needed for installation.
  4.  
  5. Straighten the steering wheel so that the tires are pointing straight-ahead.
  6.  

If equipped with an air bag, it is imperative that the steering wheel removal and installation procedure under in this section is followed.

  1. Remove the steering wheel. For more details, refer to the steering wheel removal procedure earlier in this section.
  2.  
  3. While pushing the lockplate down with the depressing tool (Tool C-4156 or equivalent), pry out the retaining ring from its groove and remove the tool, ring, lockplate, cancelling cam and spring.
  4.  
  5. Position the turn signal lever in the right turn position. Remove the screw which attaches the link between the turn signal switch and the wiper-washer switch pivot. Remove the screw which attaches the hazard warning switch knob. Remove the 3 screws attaching the turn signal switch to the steering column.
  6.  
  7. Remove the hazard switch and turn signal switch assembly by gently pulling the switch up from the column while straightening and guiding the wires up through the column opening.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Run the wiring through the opening and down the steering column.
  2.  
  3. Position the switch in the upper steering column housing. Place the switch in the right turn position, then install the 3 mounting screws and tighten until snug. Place the link in position between the turn signal switch and the wiper-washer switch pivot, then secure it in place with the retaining screw.
  4.  
  5. Install the upper bearing spring, cancelling cam and lock plate. Using tool C-4156, or equivalent, compress the lock plate and install a new retaining ring. Install the hazard warning knob with the screw.
  6.  
  7. Connect the turn signal wires and install the wiring channel.
  8.  
  9. Install the steering wheel and tighten the retaining nut to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the horn pad.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable and check the turn signal switch and dimmer switch for proper operation.
  14.  
  15. Install the lower column cover, if equipped.
  16.
