A-345

The kickdown band adjusting screw is located on the left-hand side of the transmission case near the throttle lever shaft.

  1. Loosen the locknut and back it off about five turns. Be sure that the adjusting screw turns freely in the case.
  2.
  3. Tighten the adjusting screw to 72 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  4.
  5. Back off the adjusting screw 2 full turns and tighten the locknut to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  6.

LOW AND REVERSE BAND

See Figures 2 and 3

The pan must be removed from the transmission to gain access to the low and reverse band adjusting screw.

  1. Remove the skid plate, if any. Drain the transmission fluid and remove the pan.
  2.
  3. Loosen the band adjusting screw locknut and back it off about five turns. Be sure that the adjusting screw turns freely in the lever.
  4.
  5. Tighten the adjusting screw to 72 inch lbs. (8 Nm).

Keep the adjusting screw from turning, tighten the locknut to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).

  1. Use a new gasket and install the transmission pan. Tighten the pan bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm). Refill the transmission with ATF+3 fluid.
  2.

SHIFT LINKAGE

See Figures 4 and 5

To insure proper adjustment, it is suggested that new linkage grommets be installed.

  1. Place the gearshift lever in Park position.
  2.

  1. Move the shift control lever on the transmission all the way to the rear (in the Park detent).
  2.
  3. Set the adjustable rod to an appropriate length that will not apply load in either direction. Tighten the swivel bolt to 90 inch lbs. (10 Nm).

  1. The shift linkage must be free of binding and be positive in all positions.
  2.
  3. Make sure that the engine can start only when the gearshift lever is in the Park or Neutral position.
  4.
  5. Be sure that the gearshift lever will not jump into an unwanted gear.
  6.

THROTTLE KICKDOWN ROD

See Figures 6, 7, 8 and 9

Fig. Fig. 13: 1979 and later V8 throttle rod adjustment

  1. To insure the proper alignment, the swivel must be free to slide along the flat end of the throttle rod so the preload spring action is not restricted. Clean the parts if necessary.
  2.
  3. Hold the transmission lever firmly forward against the internal stop and tighten the swivel lockscrew to 100 inch lbs. (11 Nm). Linkage backlash will automatically be taken up by the preload spring.
  4.
  5. Lower the truck, reconnect choke if disconnected, and test the linkage freedom. Move the throttle rod rearwards, slowly releasing it to confirm it will return fully forwards.
  6.
