Chrysler Full-Size Trucks 1967-1988 Repair Guide

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)

Print

The vehicle data plate on all models through 1969 is located on the top inside surface of the left wheel-well opening. On models through 1980 the plate is located on the rear face of the driver's side door. On 1981 and later models it is located on the upper left corner of the instrument panel, near the windshield.

1967-69 MODELS

A typical serial number for these years might be 2082-158000. The first 2 digits indicate the model code. The third digit indicates the number of cylinders; a 6 would mean six-cylinder, while an 8 would mean eight-cylinder. The fourth digit indicates the assembly plant, as follows:

1 or 2 Warren Truck Assembly

6 Windsor Truck Assembly

7 Missouri Truck Assembly

The fifth to tenth digits are the sequential serial number.

1970-73 MODELS

The vehicle identification number consists of a combination of 13 digits. The first seven characters identify the model, body type, GVW, engine model year and assembly plant. The last 6 digits are the sequential serial number, always starting from 000001. A typical serial number might be D24AE3U000001.

The first letter indicates the model

D = 2 Wheel Drive

W = 4 Wheel Drive

The second character indicates the series

1 = 100 ( 1 / 2 ton) series

2 = 200 ( 3 / 4 ton) series

3 = 300 (1 ton) series

The third number is the body code

1 = Conventional Cab

2 = Crew Cab

3 = Conv. Cab Utiline

4 = Conv. Cab Sweptline

5 = Crew Cab Utiline

6 = Crew Cab Sweptline

The fourth character indicates the GVW

A = 6,000 lbs. or less

B = 6,000-10,000 lbs

The fifth character indicates the engine

B = 225-1 Series

C = 225-2 Series

E = 318-1 Series

F = 360

G = 318-3 Series

J = 383 (1970-71)

J = 400 (1972-73)

K = 361-2 Series

L = 361-3 Series

M = 361-4 Series

N = 413-1 Series

P = 413-2 Series

The sixth digit gives the model year

0 = 1970 F series

1 = 1971 G series

2 = 1972 H series

3 = 1973 J series

The seventh digit gives the assembly plant.

J = Windsor

N = Burt Road

S or V = Warren

U or X = Missouri

The last six digits are the sequential serial number
