Front Wheel Anti-Lock (ABS) Valve

On 1996 models, this component was renamed the Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU). The HCU consists of the front anti-lock valve assembly and a pump/motor unit.

The ABS valve/control module is located in the engine compartment at the driver's inner fender panel. The control unit is attached to the forward side of the Hydraulic Control Unit mounting bracket.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Pick-Ups

See Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4

  1. If necessary, remove the battery for improved access.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the electrical harness at the ABS valve.
  4.

  1. Unlatch and disconnect the harness at the ABS module.

  1. Disconnect the two front brake lines at the ABS valve.

  1. Remove the stud nuts and bolt that attach the ABS valve to the inner fender panel. Then, remove the valve from the engine compartment.
  2.  
  3. If the valve is only being removed for access to another component, cover the brake line fluid ports with tape or plugs to keep dirt out.

  1. Remove the bolts attaching the module to the valve, then remove the module.
  2.  

To install:
  1. If applicable, install the replacement module on the valve.
  2.  
  3. Position the ABS valve on the mounting studs.
  4.  
  5. Install and tighten the mounting bolt and stud nuts. Tighten the nuts to 92-112 inch lbs. (10-13 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the ABS harness to the valve and electronic module. Be sure the module harness is securely latched.
  8.  
  9. Connect the brake lines to the ABS valve. Tighten the line fittings to 14-17 ft. lbs. (19-23 Nm).
  10.  
  11. If applicable, install the battery.
  12.  
  13. Fill and bleed the brake system according to the proper procedure.
  14.  

Dakota Models

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the brake lines at the front wheel anti-lock valve.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the harness wires at the front anti-lock valve.
  6.  
  7. Remove the screw and nuts attaching the front anti-lock valve to the stud plate.
  8.  
  9. Lift the valve upward off the studs and remove the valve and bracket as an assembly.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Align and seat the front wheel anti-lock valve bracket on the mounting studs.
  2.  
  3. Install and tighten the front anti-lock valve attaching screws and stud nuts. Tighten the nuts to 92-112 inch lbs. (10-13 Nm) and the screws to 170-220 inch lbs. (19-25 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Fasten the harness wires to the valve's connector.
  6.  
  7. Connect the front brake lines to the front anti-lock valve. Tighten the fittings to 140-200 inch lbs. (16-23 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  
  11. Fill and bleed the brake system according to the proper procedure.
