REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



3.9L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the belt(s) from the crankshaft pulley.
  4.  
  5. Remove the fan and shroud from the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  8.  
  9. Remove the vibration damper using the proper puller.
  10.  
  11. Using a suitable tool behind the lips of the oil seal, pry outward. Take care not to damage the crankshaft seal surface of the cover.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Install the new seal by installing the threaded shaft part of special tool C-4251, or equivalent, into the threads of the crankshaft.
  2.  
  3. Place the seal into the opening with the spring toward the engine. Place the installing adapter C-4251-3, or equivalent, with the thrust bearing and nut on the shaft. Tighten the nut until the tool is flush with the timing chain cover. Remove the tool.
  4.  
  5. Install the damper with tool C-3638, or equivalent, install the bolt and washer and tighten to specification.
  6.  
  7. Apply a small amount of sealer to the bolts and install the crankshaft pulley.
  8.  
  9. Install the fan and shroud.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable and check for leaks.
  12.  

5.2L and 5.9L Engines

A seal remover and installer tool is required to prevent seal damage.

  1. Using a seal puller, separate the seal from the retainer.
  2.  
  3. Pull the seal from the case.
  4.  

To install:
  1. Place the seal face down in the case with the seal lips downward.
  2.  
  3. Seat the seal tightly against the cover face. There should be a maximum clearance of 0.0014 in (0.035mm) between the seal and the cover. Be careful not to overcompress the seal.
  4.  

Diesel Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  6.  
  7. Drill two 1/8 in. (3mm) holes into the seal face, 180° apart. Drill two 1/8 in. (3mm) holes into the seal face, 180° apart.
  8.  
  9. Using a slide hammer with a No. 10 sheet metal screw, pull the seal out alternating from side-to-side until the seal is out.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Thoroughly clean and dry the end of the crankshaft.
  2.  
  3. Apply a bead of Loctite® 277 to the outside diameter of the seal.
  4.  
  5. Install the pilot from the seal kit onto the crankshaft.
  6.  
  7. Install the seal onto the pilot and start it into the front cover seal bore. Remove the pilot.
  8.  
  9. Use the alignment/installation tool and a plastic hammer to fully install the seal.
  10.  
  11. Install the crankshaft pulley, but do not tighten the bolts at this point.
  12.  
  13. Install the drive belt.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the crankshaft pulley bolts to 92 ft. lbs. (125 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable and check for leaks.
