REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1989-93 Pick-Ups and Ramchargers

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the map light.
  4.  
  5. Remove the six screws which attach the faceplate to the base panel. There is a screw below the heater-air conditioning control panel which is not visible from above.

  1. If equipped with automatic transmission, place the shift lever in its lowest position.
  2.  
  3. Remove the faceplate by pulling the top edge rearward to clear the brow and pulling the bottom out, disengaging the attaching clips. If the vehicle is equipped with 4WD, disconnect the indicator wires.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers. Disconnect the shift indicator actuator cable from the steering column, if equipped.

  1. Loosen the heater and air conditioning control and pull it out enough to clear the cluster housing.
  2.  
  3. Remove the screws that retain the cluster and pull the cluster out far enough to disconnect the speedometer cable by releasing the spring clip.
  4.  
  5. Remove all printed circuit board multiple connectors.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cluster assembly.
  8.  
  9. To remove the speedometer, remove the cluster lens, unplug the EMR timer wires from the speedometer, if equipped and remove the retaining screws.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Install the speedometer if removed and connect the EMR wiring, if equipped. Position the cluster to the panel and connect the speedometer cable and multiple connectors.
  2.  
  3. Push the cluster in place and install the retaining screws.
  4.  
  5. Install the heater air conditioning control screws.
  6.  
  7. Connect the shift indicator actuator cable and check for alignment.
  8.  
  9. Install the upper and lower steering column covers.
  10.  
  11. Connect the 4WD indicator if equipped, install the cluster faceplate and map light.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  

1994-96 Pick-Ups

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  1. Remove the cluster bezel as follows:
    1. Remove the cup holder and ash receiver.
    2.  
    3. Carefully pry the bezel away from the instrument panel to disengage the clips.
    4.  
    5. Unplug the cigar lighter and auxiliary power outlet connectors.
    6.

  3. Remove the knee blocker.
  4.

  1. Pull the PRND21 cable and twist to remove from the position arm, if applicable.

  1. Push the tab on the bottom of the cable retainer up, then squeeze the sides to remove the retainer from the column.
  2.  
  3. Remove the four screws that hold the cluster.
  4.  
  5. Pull the cluster rearward and unplug the two electrical connectors.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cluster.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Install the cluster in its mounted position.
  2.  
  3. If applicable, properly install the PRND21 cable.
  4.  
  5. Install the knee blocker.
  6.  
  7. Install the cluster bezel as follows:
    1. Plug in the disconnected wiring.
    2.  
    3. Carefully maneuver the cluster into its mounted position.
    4.  
    5. Install the cigar lighter and auxiliary power outlet connectors.
    6.

  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

Dakota

See Figure 7

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the instrument cluster bezel. Cluster removal is not necessary if just removing gauges.
  4.  
  5. When only removing gauge(s) or the speedometer, remove the trip odometer reset knob if equipped, remove the mask and lens assembly and remove the desired gauge from the cluster. Disconnect the speedometer cable if removing the speedometer.

  1. If equipped with automatic transmission, remove the lower column cover and disconnect the gear indicator cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the screws attaching the cluster to the instrument panel.
  4.  
  5. Pull the cluster out and disconnect all wiring and the speedometer cable. Remove the cluster from the vehicle.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Position the cluster and feed the gear indicator cable through its slot.
  2.  
  3. Connect all wiring and install the speedometer cable to the speedometer. Make sure it is securely clicked in place.
  4.  
  5. Install the cluster retaining screws. Connect the gearshift indicator cable.
  6.  
  7. Install the cluster bezel.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable and check all gauges and the speedometer for proper operation. Make sure the gearshift indicator is properly aligned.
  10.
