Windshield Wiper Switch

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1989-93 Column Mounted
EXCEPT TILT WHEEL
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower steering column cover, if equipped.
  4.  
  5. Remove the horn pad mounting screws from behind the steering wheel and remove the horn pad.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering wheel nut, matchmark the steering wheel to the shaft and remove the steering wheel with a suitable puller.
  8.  
  9. Remove the plastic wiring channel from the underside of the steering column.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the wiper switch connector, intermittent wipe module connector and cruise control connector, if equipped.
  12.  
  13. Remove the side lock housing cover.
  14.  
  15. Remove the slotted hex-head screw that attaches the wiper switch to the turn signal switch and remove the switch.
  16.  
  17. Remove the control knob from the end of the stalk. Pull the round nylon hider up the control stalk and remove the revealed screws that attach the control stalk sleeve to the wiper switch.
  18.  
  19. Rotate the control stalk shaft to the full clockwise position and remove the shaft from the wiper switch by pulling it straight out.
  20.  

To install:
  1. Install the control shaft to the wiper switch, install the screws, the hider and the control knob.
  2.  
  3. Run the wiring through the opening and down the steering column, position the switch and install the hex-head screw. Make sure the dimmer switch rod is properly engaged.
  4.  
  5. Install the side lock housing cover.
  6.  
  7. Connect the wires and install the wiring channel.
  8.  
  9. Install the steering wheel torque the nut to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the horn pad.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable and check the wiper and washer, cruise control, turn signal switch and dimmer switch for proper operation.
  14.  
  15. Install the lower column cover, if equipped.
  16.  

TILT WHEEL

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower steering column cover, if equipped, and remove the plastic wiring channel from the underside of the steering column.

  1. Remove the horn pad mounting screws from behind the steering wheel and remove the horn pad.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel nut, matchmark the steering wheel to the shaft and remove the steering wheel with a suitable puller.

  1. Depress the lock plate with the proper depressing tool, remove the retaining ring from its groove and remove the tool, ring, lock plate, cancelling cam and spring.
  2.  
  3. Remove the switch stalk actuator screw and arm.
  4.  
  5. Remove the hazard switch knob.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the turn signal switch, wiper switch, intermittent module and cruise control connectors, if equipped.
  8.  
  9. Remove the three screws and remove the turn signal switch. Tape the connector to the wires to aid in removal.
  10.  
  11. Remove the ignition key lamp.
  12.  
  13. Place the key in the LOCK position and remove the key. Insert a thin tool into the slot next to the switch mounting screw boss, depress the spring latch at the bottom of the slot releasing the lock. Remove the lock cylinder.
  14.  
  15. Remove the buzzer switch and wedge spring.
  16.  
  17. Remove the three housing cover screws and remove the housing cover.
  18.  
  19. Remove the wiper switch pivot pin with a punch and remove the switch.
  20.  
  21. Remove the control knob from the end of the stalk. Pull the round nylon hider up the control stalk and remove the revealed screws that attach the control stalk sleeve to the wiper switch.
  22.  
  23. Rotate the control stalk shaft to the full clockwise position and remove the shaft from the wiper switch by pulling it straight out.
  24.  

To install:
  1. Install the control shaft to the wiper switch, install the screws, the hider and the control knob.
  2.  
  3. Run the wiring through the opening and down the steering column, position the switch and install the wiper switch pivot pin.
  4.  
  5. Install the housing cover.
  6.  
  7. Install the buzzer switch and wedge spring.
  8.  
  9. Install the lock cylinder.
  10.  
  11. Install the ignition key lamp.
  12.  
  13. Install the turn signal switch, switch stalk actuator arm and hazard switch knob.
  14.  
  15. Install the spring, cancelling cam, lock plate and ring on the steering shaft. Depress the plate with the depressing tool and install the ring securely in the groove. Remove the tool slowly.
  16.  
  17. Connect the turn signal switch, wiper switch, intermittent module and cruise control connectors, if equipped. Install the trough.
  18.  
  19. Install the steering wheel and tighten the nut to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the horn pad.
  22.  
  23. Connect the negative battery cable and check the wiper and washer, cruise control, turn signal switch and dimmer switch for proper operation.
  24.  
  25. Install the lower column cover, if equipped.
  26.  

1994-96 Models

See Figures 3 and 4

This switch is referred to (in Mopar terminology) as the "Multi-function Switch.'' To remove the switch, a tamper resistant Torx® bit, such as the Snap-on® TTXR20B2, or equivalent, is required.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  1. Remove the tilt steering column lever, if equipped.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower fixed column shroud.
  4.  
  5. Move the upper fixed column shroud to gain access to the rear of the multi-function switch.
  6.  
  7. Remove the multi-function switch tamper resistant mounting screws using the correct tamper resistant, such as a Snap-on® tamper proof Torx® bit TTXR20B2, or equivalent.
  8.  
  9. Gently pull the switch away from the column. Loosen the connector screw. The screw will remain in the connector.
  10.  
  11. Remove the wiring connector from the multi-function switch.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Plug in the connector, then screw in the connector screw. Tighten this to 17 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the multi-function switch with the correct screws, using the correct driver bit.
  4.  
  5. Install the column upper and lower shroud.
  6.  
  7. If equipped, install the tilt steering column lever.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.
