Differential Case

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Dakota
  1. Raise the vehicle and support safely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheels and the brake drums.
  4.  
  5. Remove the housing cover and drain the lubricant.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear wheel anti-lock brake sensor, if equipped.
  8.  
  9. Remove the axle shafts.
  10.  
  11. Matchmark the bearing caps to the differential housing.
  12.  
  13. Remove the differential bearing threaded adjuster lock from each cap.
  14.  
  15. Loosen but do not remove the bearing caps.
  16.  
  17. Loosen the side adjusters using tool C-4164, or equivalent.
  18.  
  19. Remove the bearing caps, the threaded adjusters and the differential case.
  20.  

To install:
  1. Position the assembled differential case in the housing.
  2.  
  3. Install the bearing caps in their original positions according to the matchmarks made during the disassembly.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the upper bolts to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm) and finger tighten the bottom bolts.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the side adjusters until the proper side play specifications are reached.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the bearing caps bolts to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm) for 7 1 / 4 in. rear or 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm) for 8 1 / 4 in. rears.
  10.  
  11. Install both axle shafts.
  12.  
  13. Install the rear wheel anti-lock brake sensor, if equipped.
  14.  
  15. Install the housing cover and fill with the proper lubricant.
  16.  
  17. Install the drums and wheels.
  18.  
  19. Road test the vehicle.
