Chrysler Full-Size Trucks 1989-1996 Repair Guide

Timing Belts

See Figure 1

This procedure applies only to the 2.5L engine used in the Dakota which uses a timing belt. All other engines use a timing chain.

Every 30,000 miles (48,000 km) inspect and adjust the timing belt as necessary. Every 60,000 miles (96,000 km) replace the timing belt. When examining the timing belt, look for cracks, missing teeth and wear on any of the surfaces. Inspect the sprockets for grease and other deposits. If any of these conditions exist, the belt should be replaced. Please refer to Engine & Engine Rebuilding for procedures on timing belt removal and installation.
