Turn Signal/Hazard Warning Flasher Switch

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1989-93 Models
STANDARD COLUMNS

See Figure 1

  1. Remove the steering wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the turn signal lever retaining screw and remove the lever.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the turn signal switch wiring at the lower connector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the wiring cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the snapring from the upper end of the shaft.
  10.

  1. Remove the screws retaining the turn signal switch and upper bearing.
  2.  
  3. Lift out the turn signal switch and wiring.
  4.  

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  2.  

TILT COLUMNS

See Figure 2

  1. Remove the steering wheel.
  2.  
  3. Depress the lock plate with tool C-4156, or equivalent, just enough to remove the retaining ring, and pry the retaining ring out of the groove.

  1. Remove the lock plate and upper bearing spring.
  2.  
  3. Place the turn signal switch in the right turn position.
  4.  
  5. Remove the screw which attaches the link between the turn signal switch and wiper/washer switch pivot.
  6.  
  7. Remove the screw which attaches the hazard switch knob.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 3 screws securing the turn signal switch.
  10.  
  11. Gently pull the switch and wiring from the column.
  12.  
  13. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  14.  

1994-96 Models

See Figures 3 and 4

This unit is called the Multi-Function Switch for 1994-96 models. A special tamper-proof torx® bit will be required for this procedure.


CAUTION
Disconnect and isolate the negative (ground) battery cable. This will disable the air bag system. Failure to disconnect the battery could result in accidental deployment and possible personal injury. Allow the system capacitor to discharge for two minutes then begin air bag system component removal. Refer to Chassis Electrical for additional air bag system precautions and information.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  1. If equipped, remove the tilt column lever.
  2.  
  3. On Dakota models, remove the screws along the bottom edge of the knee blocker, then pull it down to disengage the slide tabs and remove the knee blocker from the vehicle.

  1. Remove the upper and lower column shrouds.
  2.  
  3. On Dakota models, remove the lower fixed column shroud. Loosen, but do not remove, the steering column upper bracket nuts so as to be able to move the upper fixed column shroud to gain access to the multi-function switch.
  4.  
  5. Using a Snap-On® TTXR20B2, or equivalent, tamper-proof torx® bit, remove the multi-function switch mounting screws.
  6.  
  7. Gently pull the switch away, loosen the connector screw, then remove the wiring connector from the switch. The screw will remain with the connector.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Install the wiring connector to the switch, then tighten the screw. The screw should be tightened to 17 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Mount the multi-function switch to the column, tightening the remaining screws to 17 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  4.  
  5. On Dakota models, position the upper fixed column shroud. Tighten the steering column upper bracket nuts to 110 inch lbs. (12 Nm). Install the lower fixed shroud.
  6.  
  7. Install the upper and lower shrouds.
  8.  
  9. If applicable, install the tilt column lever.
  10.  
  11. Install the negative battery cable to the negative battery post.
  12.  
  13. Check all functions of the multi-function switch for proper operation.
