The NP205 transfer case is a two-speed gearbox mounted between the main transmission and the rear axle. The gearbox transmits power from the transmission and engine to the front and rear driving axles.

The NP231 HD, NP 241 and NP 241 HD are all part-time transfer cases with a low range gear system. They provide three operating ranges, plus a Neutral position. These three transfer cases are virtually the same. The only difference between them is the Power Take-Off (PTO) gear used in the NP241HD model.

An identification tag is attached to the rear case of every New Process transfer case. The tag provides the transfer case model number, assembly number, and serial number, and low range ratio. The serial number also represents the date of build. For example, a serial number of 8-11-95 would represent August 11, 1995.
