Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)

The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is located on the instrument panel. It is displayed as an engine icon (graphic).

The MIL lamp lights up when the ignition key is turned on as a bulb test.

Under other conditions the MIL lamp will be illuminated when the PCM sets a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC).

DTCs can be retrieved with a scan tool via the 16-way data link connector. This connector is located on the lower edge of the instrument panel near the steering column. On 1997 models, the DTCs can be retrieved with the ignition key. See "Trouble Codes", following.

Some scan tools have a function to clear trouble codes. However, the problem should be attended to and resolved or the trouble code(s) will simply reappear.
