Crankshaft Damper

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



2.5L Engine

NOTE
Crankshaft Vibration Damper Puller 7697 or equivalent is required.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the accessory belt.
  4.  
  5. Remove the fan shroud.
  6.  
  7. Remove the vibration damper bolt and washer.
  8.  
  9. Use the puller to remove the damper from the crankshaft.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Apply silicone sealer to the keyway and install the key.
  2.  
  3. Fit the damper, aligning key and keyway.
  4.  
  5. Tighten bolt to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
  6.

3.9L, 5.2L, 5.9L Gasoline Engines

NOTE
Crankshaft Vibration Damper Puller/Installer Kit, Tool C-3688 or equivalent is required.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the fan shroud.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine fan.
  6.  
  7. Remove the accessory belt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  10.  
  11. Remove the vibration damper bolt and washer from the crankshaft.
  12.  
  13. Install the puller assembly on the vibration damper, and thread the forcing screw into the crankshaft. Install two bolts and washers through the puller and into the damper. Remove the vibration damper by turning the forcing screw.
  14.  
  15. When loosened, pull the damper off of the crankshaft

Fig. Inspect the damper for wear on its front seal surface. If worn, be sure to replace it, or the engine may leak oil

To install:

  1. Using tool C-3688, or equivalent, press the damper onto the shaft. Remove the tool and install the damper bolt. Tighten the bolt to 135 ft. lbs. (183 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the crankshaft pulley. Tighten pulley bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm). Use same torque for the fan bolts.
  4.  
  5. The remainder of the procedure is the reverse of removal.
  6.  

4.7 L Engine

NOTE
Special Tools 8512, 8513 and 1026, or equivalents, are required.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the accessory belt.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system. Remove the upper radiator hose. Remove the upper fan shroud.
  6.  
  7. Remove the belt-driven fan.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the electric fan connector.
  10.  
  11. Remove the crankshaft damper bolt.
  12.  
  13. Remove the damper with the special tools.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Clean the damper bore and crankshaft nose thoroughly before installation.
  2.  
  3. Align slot and key and install damper onto crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Assemble special tool 8512 as follows: thread nut onto shaft, then bearing with hardened surface facing nut, then the hardened washer. Coat threads with anti-seize compound.
  6.  
  7. Press the damper home with the special tool
  8.  
  9. Tighten the damper bolt to 130 ft. lbs. (175 Nm).
  10.  
  11. The remainder of the procedure is the reverse of removal.

8.0L Engine

NOTE
Special Tools 8513 and 1026, or equivalents, are required.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the accessory belt.
  4.  
  5. Remove the fan.
  6.  
  7. Drain the cooling system. Remove the radiator.
  8.  
  9. Remove the crankshaft pulley/damper bolt and washer from the crankshaft.
  10.  
  11. Using the special tool, remove the damper from the crankshaft.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Reverse the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the pulley/damper bolt to 230 ft. lbs. (312 Nm).
  4.  

Diesel
  1. Remove the accessory belt.
  2.  
  3. Remove the four damper bolts. Remove the damper.
  4.  
  5. Tighten bolts to 92 ft. lbs. (125 Nm) when installing.
  6.
