Front Axle Housing Assembly

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Ram

Ram models are fitted with either 216 FBI or 248 FBI front drive axles. The removal and installation procedures are the same for both.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front wheels and tires.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake calipers and rotors.
  6.  
  7. Remove the ABS wheel speed sensors, if so equipped.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the axle vent hose.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the vacuum hose and electrical connector.
  12.  
  13. Matchmark the front driveshaft yokes and/or flanges for reassembly. Remove the driveshaft.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the stabilizer bar links at the axle brackets.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the shock absorbers from the axle brackets.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the track bar from the axle bracket.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the tie rod and drag link from the steering knuckles.
  22.  
  23. Place a jack or other lifting device beneath the axle and attach the axle to the lifting device.
  24.  
  25. Mark the suspension alignment cams for installation reference.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect the upper and lower suspension arms from the axle bracket.
  28.  
  29. Lower the axle. The coil springs will drop with the axle.
  30.  
  31. Remove the coil springs from the axle bracket.
  32.  

To install:


WARNING
Suspension components with rubber bushings should be tightened with the weight of the vehicle on the suspension, at normal height. If the springs are not at their normal ride position, vehicle ride comfort could be affected and premature bushing wear may occur. Rubber bushings must never be lubricated.

  1. After installing the axle, align the suspension cams, but do NOT fully tighten the nuts yet.
  2.  
  3. Install the track bar but do NOT tighten the fasteners at this time.
  4.  
  5. Tighten shock absorber bolts to 89 ft. lbs. (121 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Tighten the stabilizer bar link to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Tighten the drag link and tie rod to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Tighten upper suspension arm nuts at the axle to 89 ft. lbs. (121 Nm) and at the frame to 62 ft. lbs. (84 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Tighten the lower suspension arm nuts at the axle to 62 ft. lbs. (84 Nm) and at the frame to 88 ft. lbs. (119 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Tighten the track bar bolt at the axle bracket to 130 ft. lbs. (176 Nm).

Dakota, Durango With C205F Axle

This axle is fitted to year 2000 models.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the skidplate, if fitted.
  4.  
  5. Remove the skidplate support crossmember, if fitted.
  6.  
  7. Matchmark the yokes and flanges of the front driveshaft and halfshafts, so that they can be reassembled in their original locations.
  8.  
  9. Remove halfshafts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the front driveshaft.
  12.  
  13. Remove the axle vent tube.
  14.  
  15. Support the axle housing with a suitable jack.
  16.  
  17. Remove the bolts securing the axle to the engine mounts.
  18.  
  19. Remove the bolts securing the axle to the pinion nose bracket.
  20.  
  21. Remove the axle from the vehicle.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Reverse the removal procedure. Tighten all axle mounting bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Skidplate bolts are torqued to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).

Dakota, Durango With 194 FIA Axle

This axle is fitted to 1997-1999 models.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the skidplate, if fitted.
  4.  
  5. Remove the skidplate support crossmember, if fitted.
  6.  
  7. Matchmark the yokes and flanges of the front driveshaft and halfshafts, so that they can be reassembled in their original locations.
  8.  
  9. Remove the halfshafts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the front driveshaft.
  12.  
  13. Remove the axle vent tube.
  14.  
  15. Support the axle housing with a suitable jack.
  16.  
  17. Remove the bolts securing the axle to the engine-to-transmission brackets.
  18.  
  19. Remove the bolts securing the axle to the engine mounts.
  20.  
  21. Remove the axle from the vehicle.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Reverse the removal procedure. Tighten the engine mount bolts to 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm) and the transmission bracket bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Skidplate bolts are torqued to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
